This is the only bit of your post I don't really agree with.

If you look in a Snow and Rock brochure (or other, similar) there is what I think is a fairly well-recognised guide to ability.

There are many skiers who fall into the "advanced" and even "expert" category who are niether instructor, nor some other form of professional.

It is possible to be expert in one particular "discipline" - on piste/off piste/mogul/park without being so good in one or more of the others.

I, for one, would not want to be regarded as an intermediate, based on being pretty poor in the powder, when I am quite happy on any grade of on-piste and can ski it very comfortably!

im only asking for peoples views on the skis, not as me as a skier

I've no experience of these Volkls, sorry.

But what I will say is get boots that fit well, irrespctive of colour and will allow your skiing to develop. You sound pretty young, so you should be aspiring to be as good as you can. Buying kit that may test you for a few days and then benefit you for many, many more is the way forward.

I know this from experience, as after 7 years without skiing I hired a pair of Atomic SL9's and had an absolute blast. I went home and ordered some GS9's and went to Kaprun. The first few runs were a bit hairy and I thought "maybe these are a bit quick for me" But once I settled they were fantatsic and I improved with them. I now want something faster and snappier.

So, enjoy your new skis, get some sound advice and take your time with the boots and become the best skier you can.

And don't take too much notice of some of the digs you will get on here - right Rossfra8??

Fantastic post!!

Its the age-old thing isn't it?

I don't think anyone ever gives a true appraisal of their own ability, either for fear of sounding big-headed or the polar opposite of not wanting people to know that they are actually not that good (in which there shoiuld be no shame or stigma.)

Listen in the apres bar. And then laugh. I have in the past made a mental note of some of these "superstars" and their outfits/equipment. If I happen to see them on the hill the next day I take a good look at their style, body-position, control, speed etc.

It can be very revealing and, of course, entertaining.

You can't go wrong with Scott gloves in my experience. I've had a pair for about 10 weeks on snow and although they have stretched and worn a bit they are really in very good order. Warm, light and comfortable at a decent price; I've been really please with them.

Yes, its a slope where the instructor would take you after about 3 days lessons, typically.

Looks good, doesn't it?
