This past week has seen deep cold right across Europe, keeping the snow and slopes in great condition throughout The Alps and Scandinavia. Heavy snows have come to the South of the region this week, with the Pyrenees doing particularly well.

In North America there has been a little new snow, although some Colorado ski areas have reported significant fresh snow.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

Although the past 24 hours have seen temperatures moderate across The Alps, very cold weather is set to return over the next 48 hours and temperatures will return to seriously cold (between -10C and -25C) for a few days. Temperatures will then rise gradually over the next week, with prevailing weather being generally clear and cool.

Once again, be aware of the risk of frostbite over the next few days. Take extra layers, minimise exposed skin, use protective cream, stay hydrated and take regular breaks.

The cold and dry looks like it might give way to snowier weather from around the middle of next week, but that's a little far out in the forecast to be sure at this point.

Keep warm and carry on!

Your best bet is to contact either your nearest French embassy or consulate, or to contact Chamonix Tourist Office, for advice as to what alternative treatment may be available locally.

For obvious reasons I'm going to lock this thread here.

Welcome to J2Ski - interesting destination; please give us a trip report when you get back!

Cold temperatures continue in The Alps and, although they will moderate briefly toward February averages over the next few days, they are set to stay cold for another week.

This just in from those nice people at Meribel Unplugged :-

Absolutely FREEZING, but fantastic snow, both on and off piste. Temperatures are arctic..- 20c to - 30c in 3 Valleys.

Diesel cars are freezing up so if driving out add anti freeze to your fuel.Bring snow chains as side roads are still icy. Main roads are clear up the mountain at the mment.

Cold weather is set to continue..so dig out full face balaclavas, good mittens, Grandma's woolly underwear..

This is without doubt the best start to winter we had had in my memory of 25 years in Meribel.

A PROPER winter with cold weather and loads of snow. Just like it used to be in the old days !!

Ok, so only yourself to worry about! Get in! 8)

Get out and go skiing, really!

If you're fairly chilled then consider an independent chalet; most will go out of their way to make you feel at home.

If you want something a bit more lively, there are a couple of smaller operators who specialize in mixing up groups and singles - look at Hofnar in Morzine?

It's out there - go get it.

But if you go skiing in Flaine now, you can find free accessories just lying around in the snow!
