I believe the lift pass from Alpe d'Huez covers Serre Che for a day too. Does anyone have any knowledge of whether it is easy to get to Serre Che for the day from AdH, as I'll be there later in the season ?

Having all of the suggested equipment with you is all very well, but how many skiers actually know how to use belays, carabiners, crampons ropes etc, and even more so, could do so in difficult and threatening situations ? This sounds more like really serious kit for really serious wildnerness exploring. Way beyond anything I would think of trying !

Yes, it's a bit like joining the M6 from a minor road !

I think I'm right in saying that you can just cross the road from the Harfenwirt and take the Tennladen T-bar, then ski from the top of the drag lift across to the gondola.

Sometimes it's discretion being the better part of valour and just take the gondola down at the end of the afternoon. That way you can also (legitimately) end your afternoon with a drink or two on the mountain without feeling you're being reckless.

I've stayed at the Sonnschein in Niederau several times and always found it excellent. Has a pool and sauna and is very comfy.

Interesting comment Dylan Ski re pain on the outside edge of the foot, which I occasionally get, on one foot in particular. My particular brand of boot has only three buckles, not 4, which may be part of the problem ! But I'll definitely bear in mind the need to check buckle tightness. It usually seems to ease off as the day goes on anyway.

Must say, I had 5 days great skiing last week in the Kitzbuehler Alpen. Obviously it was nearly all artificial snow, but they were producing it overnight by the shedload, and the daytime weather was that fabulous combination of cold and sunny. No complaints from any in our group, except the odd one who was hoping to go off piste.
