Well I thought it was amazing that Tony had managed to photograph a Happy Eater fried breakfast in Austria!

Is that what it's like in Norfolk then?

You have to do that! :D
The main weather feature of the past seven days, on both sides of the Atlantic, has been early Spring conditions - with temperatures 5C to 10C above average.

Although this has diminished snow cover, particularly at low levels, high level resorts continue to benefit from the big snows earlier in the season.

Despite the warmth, a number of Austrian resorts had fresh snow this last week, whilst American and Canadian ski areas in the North West have seen some substantial snow storms.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

The current high temperatures are about to give way to more usual mid-March levels, and should fall around 10C by Monday. Un-settled weather should roll into the Northern and Central Alps for several days, and the forecasts are looking good for some useful snowfall in these areas early next week.

Beyond the middle of next week, the outlook is much less clear but it does look as if most of the Alpine area will cool off for the rest of the month.

Update - 16th March 2012

The overnight runs of the forecast models look to have increased the expected snow for the Northern Alps, at least, with temperatures coming down a step. Could be quite a few areas with Powder all over again next week... :D

Interesting... smoking something on the way up perhaps? 8)

Where was this? And why didn't you just split your skis and fill the empty spaces?

I noticed just about all the main lifts in La Clusaz now have "solo" lanes and the lifties were being very pro-active in getting chairs and bubbles filled - so they wouldn't have got away with it there!

You sure Tony? 120's about right for me on the piste and I don't think my arms are particularly long... (awaits comments from bandit about gibbons... ).

I'll try and answer your question! 8)

I think there probably is a market for your idea but, for me, time away in the mountains is all about being there and doing the things we can't do at home - and that would be my priority for the children too.

When children are still too young to ski all day, my preference would be for a Nanny or Children's Club; so they can enjoy some play time in the snow when not actually skiing. And when they're big enough to ski all day... I think I'll have a hard time stopping them.

Of course, if the UK does clamp down on "unauthorized" absence and you can provide a way round that... then you're on a winner!

:?: Not entirely sure who thinks what TBH, from reading that... ...but it's not rocket science; if you're not on the piste then you're off it.

ellistine wrote:If there had been an avalanche the piste 50m below us would have been taken out too.

That happens. I posted a picture last Xmas of an avalanche that had crossed a piste in Samoens; triggered by two boarders - one of whom was seriously injured - on a slope right next to the piste and very much like the slope with the avalanche fences in one of Tony's pictures.

There have been at least two fatalities from avalanches onto pistes in Europe this season that I'm aware of (and around 30 off-piste, so far).

There are regular (free) avalanche safety lectures in a number of French resorts (Henry's Avalanche Talk in various places, the Avalanche Academy in Chamonix for starters) and also in the UK every Autumn. There's lots of good stuff online too. Seek it out.
