A great week in Les Gets
Started by User in France, 25 Replies
I have just returned from Les Gets with Mrs Iceman to be. And what a fantastic week it was :)

To set my stall out now regarding this review. I am not going to talk about the price of food and drink. It is France, we know it is not cheap. We knew that when we went, so I am not going to discuss the price of a hot chocolate. ;)

We hired a car from Geneva airport and drove for just over an hour to Les Gets. The car hire picking up (Swiss side) was really slick

We arrived on 31 January ahead of predictions of heavy snow. The area had already had over 1m in 2 days. I went fully prepared to be putting chains on the car, we were lucky. We did not get caught in the snow, 2 hours later the heavens opened and did not stop for two days :)

We stayed at Hotel Christina. A small (20 bedrooms) hotel family run. Fantastic place, 4 course meal every night - the quality of the food equivalent to what you find in top restaurants - pigeon, pheasant, venison, Guinea fowl are examples of the meat I ate. They have a wine list of 130 bottles!! The hotel is very reasonable price. The hotel also has 2 hot tubs and a sauna

The skiing - brilliant. We had fresh powder for 3 days. The best snow I have ever skied in. Temperatures low meant it stayed fresh. The skiing in Les Gets is varied plenty for all abilities. Tonnes of off piste if there's sufficient snow - which we had :)

We skied in Les gets most days, I found morzine a bit limiting with shorter runs and big flat bits. We drove to avoriaz one day (you can ski to morzine then get the bus, but I prefer to drive as it is quicker). The skiing in avoriaz is great, we were only there for 1 day. We dropped into Switzerland. It was a bluebird day :)

We had 2 x 2 hour private lessons with The Snow Institute. They were very good and we're happy teaching 2 different abilities. They are a British company with just British instructors. Imthink that makes a big difference

This was an excellent holiday, I usually stay in Morzine. Next time I will be back in
Les Gets at the same hotel.

I will add some more info on places to eat and drink in my next instalment. I need to make dinner :P

Hired a car from geneva Swiss side for this holiday. Winter tyres and chains come as standard. Book on French side and they are extra. The French car hire location is also a pain to get to

£174 for a week all in. Corsa suitable for 2 people :p
Morzine to Avoriaz

Hi

Currently sitting in geneva airport for 2.5 hours so have a few minutes to reply

Adders is correct, the best way is a bus to prodains lift. The cable car that has recently been updated. Going to lindarets is probably not a good option.

The bus service as a whole in morzine is very good but does finish early. Getting to avoriaz on the bus to prodains is the best option.

The other option would be to go up the super morzine and ski there. It does not take more than 10 minutes and depending on what side of avoriaz you want to ski it can be a better option. If you want to do lindarets, mossettes or into Switzerland IT would be preferable to the prodain.

If you are only going for a few days, there is plenty of good skiing to be had in morzine and les gets that are linked. How long are you there for?

I read this morning that there are talks of a linking lift from morzine to avoriaz - something that is needed!

2hrs 20 to go ;)
Got here ok, no chains needed. Took is just over an hour. Starting coming down heavy about 2pm. Wouldn't want to be driving now.

Just enjoying a fine house red before picking up gear

:)
The wigglies are showing for a cold week brrrrr
I had an email from the hotel I am stay in today telling me to make sure we have chains as the police are stopping people before they come up the mountain to check chains. If people dont have them they are sending them back down!

Weather for Geneva is showing sleet so I am remaining confident about landing..............
2 hours sleep - don't think that counts as one sleep.

#giddy :)
