Let's hope the weather is as good as that when we're there in January - plenty of sun and snow :D
Some people in our chalet were only using sun cream factor 10 and they got burnt like strawberries  I was fine because I was using one of those special ski cream sticks that do sun cream and lip salve, and it was factor 50 :D |

Thanks Trencher :D I'm pretty sure I didn't whack the ski in a rut or anything. They'd pisted it and it was nice and smooth, which is why I was going reasonably fast. And there wasn't any snow stuck in the binding or on my boot - I know because the snow was all hard and icy and I'd very carefully checked my bindings and boots. Does the type of ski make any difference? They were Rossignol Zenith Z76, 170's - mens skis again, I know, I'm getting used to it now  |

Felthorpe - I think PDS is short for Porte du Soleil, which isn't a resort but a ski area made up of 12 ski resorts.

When we were being fitted up with our rented skis in the chalet in Tignes Les Boisses, they set my DIN at 7.0, and I was a bit worried about this because I've never been on such a high setting. I remembered reading that age comes into it as well, and I thought maybe it should be lower because of this. So the guy lowered it a bit for me.
And then, when we were ski-ing that first morning, I was quite happily going along at a reasonable speed, and one of my skis came off  It was a real shock because my boot just slid out of the binding - it didn't unclip - and I was suddenly ski-ing on one leg! Luckily I was on an easy piste so after I'd picked myself up off the snow I managed to retrieve my ski and carry on. And when we went back to the chalet for lunch I told them about it and the poor guy had to put the setting back up again. I skied the rest of the 2 1/2 days on that setting and everything was fine. I fell over lots of times (mainly in the powder) and the binding undid as it's supposed to, but I didn't slide out of my ski again. Maybe I should listen to the technician next time and keep my mouth shut  |

Oh dear, poor Felthorpe
Never mind, maybe for the 2014 group J2Ski holiday I should just say we're all going to XXX on the XXX and staying in XXX, and ask who would like to come - and I'll send a personal invitation to Bandit so she doesn't feel left out :D. And I'll do all the research first to make sure it's a great place with plenty of ski-ing for all levels of skier/boarder and that the accommodation is fine but not too expensive etc. etc.   |

This is a photo taken from the mountain restaurant Le Trifollet, which is above La Daille (in the Val d'Isere half of the Espace Killy).
We skied here from Les Boisses on the first morning (Monday 23rd April 2012) of my research trip, after going down into Les Brevieres first to have a look at it, and by the time we got here I was ready for a hot chocolate! This restaurant is in a very good position because it's connected by green, blue, and red runs and you don't have to ski down into La Daille to reach it (although we did because we wanted to). There's the blue Criterium, the green Verte, and the red Triffolet as well as the red Coupe de Monde 'OK' pistes down into La Daille. It is, however, very expensive. Our hot chocolate was 4-20 euros and the tea was 4-50. But the view is great and I really did need a rest and a hot drink by the time we got there :D ![]() |

It would be an interesting experiment to label one's skis, in small writing, 'left' and 'right' and then use them as normal and see how many times you ended up putting them on the correct foot - something like spinning a coin and seeing how many times it came down 'heads'.
I can well believe that if you consistently put the same ski on the same foot then after a lot of use the skis would develop different wear patterns, which you could detect if you swapped them around, like shoes do. However, even if I had my own skis I don't think that ski-ing once or twice a year (like I do) would be enough time for the differential wear pattern to develop. It's different for DaveMac because he does masses of ski-ing. I am sure I would notice if it was possible somehow to swap around my left and right welly boots  |

What a waste of all the skis etc. destroyed in the shop fire
