erm.. thanks, I thought I might be correct :) Splitboards perform just fine in the environments they're designed for though. And what you described are crampons. |

I'm not sure I'm quite getting the joke here. Some of this stuff isn't stupid.
much favored by heli-skiers.
Are you sure you're not thinking of the dampers or weights used, mostly in the past, to stop the front of the ski chattering? The Atomic ARC for example?
Split boards, actually boards that split into skis so you can attach skins for climbing. Made by Burton and Voile and others and much used in Backcountry touring. Dramatically lighter than snow shoes and they allow the mixed party of skiers and boarders to use the same tracks on ascents.
crampons, or Harscheisen as we call them here, essential touring gear for making ascents on steep icy surfaces where skins will no longer grip. No ski tourer would ever embark on a trip without them.
I do have that list : http://snowslider.net/reviews/ and http://snowslider.net/reviews/hardware/ |

I think 30mins is a little optimistic, more like 45mins. Still not so far though. |

We used to be based in the area for a few seasons, it was fine. January was my favourite time, quieter than most of the season. |

Grindelwald obviously has the great scenery of the Eiger, Jungfrau. Monch etc. That's why it got a place on the early grand tours and early skiing. But it's not really a great ski proposition, there's three areas the Schilthorn, the main Grindelwald/Wengen area and Grindelwald First. They're not particularly well linked and being in one centre and trying to get to another is awkward and you spend way, way too long on the trains, it's like commuting really. There's some fantastic runs in places and I suspect I've missed out in the past by not skiing at First, I hiked there recently and thought it looked reasonable skiing.
All in all it doesn't work for me, in the years I lived locally I've been maybe 4 or 5 times, admittedly part of that is that the traffic round Interlaken is awful, if you stayed there it wouldn't be a problem. In that area I rather prefer Adelboden/Lenk personally. If you're looking for the ultimate Swiss, near a famous mountain thing then Zermatt is about 100 times better in pretty much every way I can think of. Grindelwald is still good, it's just if you take the scenery away I'm not sure what's left. I suppose the scenery is one of the main reasons we ski though! It's just in Zermatt if you move the Matterhorn and the other peaks there's still loads of great skiing all easily reachable from the town. Isn't the closest skiing at Thollon ? :?: Snow there was pretty poor last year I think, I didn't go but each time I drove by the lake you can look up and see a thin cover of artificial snow on the descent run. |

just waking this up, it's incredible scenery round Kandersteg, I took a two day hike last weekend over the Gemmipass from Kandersteg to Leukerbad and on to Adelboden.
There's photo's here : Gemmipass - Kandersteg -> Leukerbad Gemmipass - Leukerbad -> Adelboden It's the summer of course and there's no snow yet but you get the idea how stunning it is round there. |
