Ok, fair point... should have said Eastern Switzerland perhaps...

But it looks like there's more snow in the forecast for "ise and surrounding regions" next week... 8)

Verbier and Les Diablerets should be open this weekend - and I'd assume a fair few of the smaller resorts too; any of your local hills opening ise?

I shouldn't quibble over the difference between good and very good really :D

We should have opened last weekend but it was postponed to this weekend, I expect that'll go ahead now. It's weekend only until Dec' 8th but there's some racers up there now.

Admin wrote:Floydie, Austria and Switzerland have just had one of the biggest November snows for many years and the forecast is for the weather to remain cold, and for the snow to spread South (possibly in lesser quantities than last week though).

That's been widely reported and it's not really entirely true. There's been good amounts of snow in Austria and it's higher than usual there but not entirely unprecedented. Switzerland has received a fair amount of snow as well but it's highest in the areas nearer Austria, here in the Valais it's pretty good but not entirely without precedent.

Still it looks good, here's the view out of my front door this morning :

Seeing the snow falling in the alps has really got me in the mood again. First trip in 5 years booked for February and I can't wait. :D

I saw an ad for Salamon ski socks. Do these really make a difference over normal socks, especially the shin protection?

Not seen those I think. But, X socks are widely recommended, http://www.x-socks.com/. I've had several pairs and they last a season long at least.

Skiing in April!!!???

alex odonnell wrote:Thanks for all this advice! I am tied to Crans as we have just bought an apartment there. It wont be ready till Easter, so obviously in future I will be going earlier than April. Will there be ANYWHERE whithin driving distance from Crans where we will be able to ski at that time of year?

Sure, Saas Fee and Zermatt would be best from there, not a lot in the distance although it's got to be an hour or so. For Saas you can park within walking distance of the lift, for Zermatt it's parking at Täsch and the train from there.

Or, the funi from Crans to Sierre and then the train to Zermatt, not sure how long that takes.
Wall Mounting Ski Storage

82ross wrote:Currently my skis are in their bag and in the garage. Temps and humidity are ok, but other people keep moving them without care and occasionally piling other stuff on top! Grr.

I would like to store my skis, wall mounted horizontally. Preferably with ski base to wall or at an angle so ski design can be seen.

Is there any long term affects of storing skis like this? Would it damage edges if left untouched for too long and on a poor mount? Should I just settle for bases flat?

Any opinions are welcome.

That sounds like a good plan. The garage is fairly good place to store skis assuming the general characteristics of a garage are that there's no extreme of temperature and the humidity is generally slighter higher than the house which can be dry. We're fortunate to have a store at the chalet and a wine cellar here that's ideal. The only problem I'd see is using the back wall and then spending the year reversing in, the fumes and particulates in them aren't ideal then.

What works for me is to use the supports for shelf systems, just attach the rails to the wall and slot the supports in. Like this :

You've an idea to mount at a greater angle and that should be reasonable as well. It's just harder to setup, the shelf system I use cost about 10.- chf for the rails and 4.- chf for each support so it's cheap. Obviously you can also put shelves on the rail as well.

My reckoning is that skis weigh around 6-8 kg per pair, although those above are 7kg, 3.2kg and 4.2kg. These are just the ones that have ended up here (in case of emergency), at the chalet the rack takes about 7 pairs with 4 fix points into concrete on each rail.

Storing skis clamped together will adversely affect the camber and flex of the skis. You see mine are racked with the binding down, it's negligible for those bottom pairs which have touring bindings on them weighing 370g and 1670g but the top pair have a Atomic system on them at around (I guess) 3.5kg. A 3 or 4kg weight against the camber will deform the ski. The effect of this varies with ski construction.
