Ski Amade Area - some advice please.
Started by User in Austria, 18 Replies
Thanks SF, but that's the web page I found and all I can find is the area pass (218 euros for 7 days for an adult). I was looking for a link to the local area passes, if there are such things.
What if theres no snow?

Yes, it has happened. What you do is - drink a lot! :D Or get shipped to a nearby resort which has got snow.

But don't worry - it doesn't happen very often, even in Borovets. When are you going?
Ski Amade Area - some advice please.

I'm off to Schladming in a few weeks' time - is the Ski Amade ski pass the only one available, or can you get one that just serves the immediate Schladming/Haus/Rohrmoos area? We've got a mixed group going and, for some of them, a massive area lift pass would be a bit of a waste of money, as they will not stray far from main area.

Can only seem to find reference to the Ski Amade lift pass on various websites and it's expensive. Covers a massive area, but not cheap! Anyone help please?

Hi there, know this area pretty well, so here's my opinion on various aspects of a skiing holiday - for what it's worth! I've ranked the resorts - purely my experience and opinion - others may disagree.

A. Tough skiing - 1. Chamonix, every time 2. Avoriaz 3. Les Gets/Morzine
B. Nice village with plenty of bars all within walking distance - 1. Les Gets 2. Chamonix 3. Morzine 4 Avoriaz
C. Range of skiing for lots of abilities, reasonable price lift pass - 1. Les Gets/Morzine 2. Avoriaz 3. Chamonix
D. Wide range of bars, busy town night life 1. Chamonix 2. Morzine 3. Les Gets 4. Avoriaz
E. Snow sure in March 1. Avoriaz (by a mile) 2. Chamonix 3. Les Gets 4. Morzine
F. Ski convenience 1. Avoriaz 2. Les Gets 3. Morzine 4. Chamonix
G. Near to Geneva 1. Chamonix/Les Gets (hour) 2. Morzine (1 hour 10) 3. Avoriaz (Hour and a half)

However, there are also places such as La Clusaz, Flaine, Morillon, Samoens, St Gervais, which might also fit the bill. If there's 30 of you, wherever you are will be pretty lively, just because you are there, I would suggest!

The thing about Chamonix is that the skiing is spread over four or five areas, only two of which are linked (Brevant and La Flegere) and accessible from the town. The other areas on the lift pass - Les Houches, La Tour and (best of all) Argentiere are all a bus ride away. The areas are all worth a day's skiing, so you'd jump on a bus in the morning, stay there all day, then pootle back again in the evening. Les Gets, Morzine and Avoriaz can all be done without a bus, pretty much.

Hope that helps! I'm sure some more advice will be along in a minute or so!

Seems strange - must have been an old image, as there's been good cover up there since mid-December. Certainly looked complete cover when I checked 5 mins ago and there's been no new snow since yesterday.

Looking at the Les Gets webcam today it looks like it might be needed - enjoy it!

Not sure which Les Gets webcam you've been looking at, Kate. The ones I can see show complete cover all over the resort and they're quoting 55cm at the bottom, 130cm at the top. The Chamois red run down to the village from Mont Chery (south facing and always the last to open and the first to close) is open, so conditions must be pretty good. This link shows the village from half way up Mt Chery. Looks pretty good to me and that's before the big dump forecast tomorrow.

AVORIAZ - FIRST TIMER!! - Please help!!

Hi there,

Avoriaz is a pretty big area by itself, with a decent snow park up above the village and a "playground" down through the trees towards Lindaret, which attracts lots of boarders, so I'd say you will have plenty to do just by getting the limited area Avoriaz pass. However, you are ideally placed there to make the most of the massive area either side of Avoriaz, either by dropping down into Morzine and heading over to Les Gets and the snow park on Mont Chery (which is pretty good too) or by heading over to Chatel or the Swiss resorts. If I was only going for 4 days and it was my only ski/board of the season, I'd invest in the Portes du Soleil pass, hang the expense and go for it! )
