Having only started skiing last year I would say Skiing is easier to pick up (judging by the amount of first time boarders in saw on their backside) so if you are going for a week i would and thats only my opinion try skiing first, you can always go for snowboarding once you have the feel for the conditions.

All

Thanks for all the advice, I think based on that I will definatley book some lessons and will hire for a few more trips, I suppose its easy to think that becasue I had six lessons in Castleford you should be able to just get on with it, but like everything else I believe there is always something to learn and im not the type to not take advice from more experienced skiers.

Thanks to all

Thanks for that I am only going for a few days at Christmas so probably wont take up lessons then but presume in a bigger resort next year it would be well worth doing.

I learnt to ski last year at exscape in Castleford and have had one week skiing in Austria (kaprun) where I did fine after first couple of days on proper snow. By end of week I had skied a couple of black runs and felt ok. I like most people am now hooked and am going away over Christmas (kranska gora)and intend to go at least another twice next year not sure where though yet.

How do I now advance further other than just going out on my own and skiing, I wouldnt mind taking more courses or lessons and preumse this would be better done actually on the piste rather than dry/artificial snow.

I would also like to know if its worth buying my own boots and can someone explein the difference in skis from begginer to intermediate. All advice welcome and im a solo skier most of time.

I am glad you are so excited about skiing, I like you wanted to ski for years but no one to go with unfortunatly, I went for the first time in March this year after taking six lessons at xscape at Castleford which I found invaluable for when I got there. First couple of days was hard work but then it all just seemed to click and I was off, I cant wait to get back and am planning at least two trips for early 2010.

As regards your daughter I saw so many kids there in ski school that looked like they were loving it so im sure she will be fine.
Oh im also 36 and just wiched I had started years ago, have fun.
Kaprun!! Information required.

Kaprun was ok it was my first time skiing and thought it was an excelleant place to start, the glacier is good but did get foggy on one occasion and wasnt marked out very well, I would also take a trip over to zell am see it was pretty cool there too. It was bit quiet on a night and it was livelier in Zell but all round good resort and I would go back.
