You are soooo right Pavel, I am coming back to check far too often already , along with searching for ski holidays, and checking out universities near ski slopes that I can apply to work at when I've finished (if I finish) writing up....seriously, anything other than work!!
Even posts on other threads have given me more ways of procrastinating..... in a 1 hour seminar this morning, I was re-living my skiing holiday (an idea you guys gave me!), the guy must have thought i really enjoyed his lecture because of the smile on my face...didnt hear a word though! |

Woohoo! I got an answer right!
At least now I can start working again! (That is unless there is another ski quiz that distracts me!) .....so if Tony got 0 out of 10, then does that mean that Basil Brush HAS used a stealth bomber, F1 car and modern skis?!! Thanks for the very welcome distraction though! :D |

I’m new on j2ski but needed a break from writing up 3 years worth of lab work and so decided to give this quiz a try, despite knowing pretty much NOTHING about skiing other than what I learnt in my 1st week earlier this year! Little did I know that I would spend hours searching the internet for answers instead of working!
So I know my answers may seen ridiculous to most of you on here who actually know what they are talking about but if I don’t submit my answers now I’m going to keep trying to find the answers on the internet and my thesis is NEVER going to get finished, and plus I don’t have to worry about giving answers away, coz there are people who know waaaay more than me on here….so although the answers are probably laughable to most of you…here goes! 1: Honestly don’t know, did I mention I know nothing about skiing (yet), except that I love it? 2: Same again…. 3: All made with Fibreglass? 4: Something to do with Vibration Dampening technology? 5: Finally one Google can help me with: Heavenly (over the Nevada, California border) Portes du Soleil (over the French, Swiss border) 6: I think it was based on a design of a mini-hydroelectric/water mill in the hotel of Robert Winterhalden, the transmissions gave him the idea of towing skiers up a hill! 7: I think this is how you calculate the flex of a ski? If it is then Y would represent the flex of the ski 8: This one I was completely stuck on, Google doesn’t help with numbers, the only thing I had to go on was a previous competition on here about the 5 magic numbers every skier should know…….but I pretty sure they don’t match up but I’m going to say that’s what they are anyway (although I’m not sure what order they should be in!!!) DIN settings, Ski length, Turning radius, Sidecut, Mark-up price 9: Again, I’m new to this (that’s my excuse for my ignorance) but I’m going to hazard a guess….don’t laugh to much if they are ridiculous!!! Lightweight ‘non-wood’ skis…not exactly a ‘new’ invention I know but… Shaped skis ‘Fat’ skis 10: I have absolutely no idea, Google let me down on this too….the only thing I could find was a North American Alpine event that the top level skiers attended because the World Cup championships in Spain had been cancelled so the North American and Canadian ski teams went to train and compete in, even though it’s usually attracts the ‘B’ level team members….. I realise this is still a competition so doesn’t answer the question, but I spent so long trying to find the answer that I had to put SOMETHING to justify it to myself! Well, like I said I had to submit this now so that I can get back to writing up instead of searching Google for the answers, the title of the thread doesn’t quite fit for me….it should have read ‘workless days’ instead of ‘sleepless nights’! |

I would DEFINATELY recommend Niederau, I went there on my first ski holiday having never so much as seen a ski in real life before and had an amazing time. The red ski school there have a brilliant structure, where no-one had to do anything they werent comfortable with, but they still made sure you progressed.(http://www.1-skischule-wildschoenau.at/skischule1_eng.html)
I dont know what other people think (dont feel I can comment after 1 week skiing) but I think it'd be better for you to have seperate lessons at the right ability, rather than trying to get lessons together, then everyone will progress at what feels right for them! When I was skiing, the kids were whizzing down the slopes after 1 day, while I was still practicing 'side-sliding'!! So your OH might get left behind in a family lesson! Id say that everywhere in Niederau is within walking distance of the nursery slopes and gondola so no worries for buses, although if you and your eldest did fancy anything more challenging, there is always Auffach (short bus ride away). But certainly, your younger kids, and OH wont need to go anywhere else if they have never skiied before, there's plenty to do for beginners! I went through Thomsons, flying from Newcastle, but Im pretty sure it'd be easy enough (and cheaper) to book everything online. I havent checked easyjet, but they might fly to Munich airport, which is just as close as Salzberg. And if you could make it from Manchester, you might find you have a lot more options, (only an hour more in the car than Leeds!) Some of the hotels in Niederau also have family rooms/apartment type suites, check out the Harfenwirt and the Sonnschein for a start! There is tobogganing and sleigh rides available, plus a ski show, and lots of the hotels have swimming pools! So plenty to do for adults and kids, and the Irish bar (O Malleys) has an Elvis and a Karaoke night, that I saw plenty of kids at! Also, I found it pretty cheap for drinks and food (certainly cheaper for drinks than Newcastle!!!) so its pretty great all round!!! |
