That makes sense. I only needed one night near the airport on the way back from Aviemore so I booked the Premier Inn, probably as well I didn't leave it any longer to do either.

Thanks all

I can't make the bus/train thing work really with timing so I'm going to have to have a car, I just take it for granted there'll be bus or train here so it's annoying, no wonder people don't use public transport really.

Travelodge would have been perfect but they seem to be full on Saturday night anywhere nearby so maybe something's going on locally.

Thanks, I think the on site ones are all over 100 quid which seems steep. I've used a Premier Inn at Falkirk which is only 50 quid a night for room only previously and then got breakfast at the airport, looks like I'll be doing that again.

This Sunday for one week, if there's snow I'll get a day skiing as well on the Saturday.

I am looking to buy a set of all-mountain skis that I can mainly use for carving but can also use to do the occasional tree powder run or hit a few jumps in the park (70% on-piste, 30% off).

I would say I am an intermediate skier and go abroad for 3 weeks a year (but do at least 3 hrs a week dry-slope racing) so I am looking for something towards the top end.

I have a short list (which isnt very short) of:

Atomic Nomad Blackeye
Atomic Nomad Highnoon
Salomon X Wing Tornado
Salomon X Wing 10
Head Xenon Xi 10.0
Volkl AC20

I dont feel confident enough or have the skill level to use my thin slalom skis on all terrain and feel I need something more stable.

I am also having problems deciding which length would be best. I am very used to skiing on racing skis of 155cm or 160cm so have been looking in the 165cm region. When I got my boots from Ellis Brigham (see other thread) the other week, the sales person recomended a 170cm for the sorts of things these skis are designed to do. Ellis Brigham have the Salomons and Head skis for testing so will go and try these out but I dont think I can test any of the others.

Also, is it worth buying skis in England or waiting untill I get to Mayrhofen in December? I assume I would be able to find more skis to test but then I might waste potential good skiing time and they may not be any cheaoer.

So....any thoughts or experiences on any of these skis/issues?

Cheers
Tom

You can ski powder on slalom skis, take a bit of getting used but huge, huge fun. However, I can see why you might not )

As for those skis, search me, all skis are about the same in the end. I'd recommend whatever Sport Conrad have cheap, I seem to recall some Atomic Nomad Crimsons pretty cheap on their site.

Does any J2Skier north of the border (or south for that matter) know a cheap hotel near the airport? I've an early flight out of there and need to drive down the night before from Aviemore.

Of course there are many other things that a boot fitter does besides getting the size right. Some of these can be accomplished by the amateur at home. But I don't think that people should not ski because they have a limited budget and are put off by thinking you have to have boots fitted.

well said.
