Well it's a little slow on here this evening so I thought I would post my review.
28th March (20.00) - a few drinky-poos at home then at the Bahnhof 29th March (00.53) on the train to Munich and away for a 4 night break in the Zillertal, plan being in hotel and ready to ride by 10.30. Mission accomplished, top of the Tux at 3250m 12.00pm, snowing hard and visibility not great. Powder conditions from the top, flying down linking turns nicely when suddenly I am thrown over the front of the board, 2 cartwheels later and narrowly missing a woman standing in the middle of the slope I come to a stop. Absolute agony in my rear ankle, could not take any load whatsoever. Sat cursing waiting for my skiing buddies to catch up. They retreive my goggles from 30ft up the hill (first point of head contact during aforementioned cartwheels) and ski down. Shocked to see me writing in pain and bleeding all over my face, they assume my facial injury is cause of my consternation and whip out the mobiles. I tell them to put them away as it is my ankle not my face that is the problem. Decide I have to get down somehow and brave it down to the next hut, crying out in pain at every turn or bump. Have some lunch and a jolly good moan before doing the last 3km to the main station in abject agony. Throw the board in for a service and sit at the bar drowning my sorrows whilst they continue. Get back to hotel and struggle with getting my boots off, after which I can see the ankle swell before my eyes. Dinner and quite a few drinkies later I tell the lads to head off alone in the morning whilst I get a taxi down to Mayrhofen to see the doc. 30th March 12.00pm - Quick bite of lunch at Mo's, alone and feeling sorry for myself whilst waiting for the doc to have his lunchbreak!! Get a series of x-rays with no clear break or fracture, told it is just badly bruised and given some physio and painkillers that make 1 in 10 peoples stomach bleed with alcohol (according the fact sheet). Hang around town waiting for the lads with crutches, watching the Snowbombers before deciding to take crutches back as I was likely to do an injury to myself with them deathtraps. Met the boys, had some dinner, got drunk and decided that I was not going to return for follow up x-rays and that I was going riding in the morning. 1st April 8.30am - boots on and what a relief, they actually supported me perfectly and I could walk in them, further more I could ride. The weather was awseome and the slopes of the Eggalm totally empty. From there up the Rastogkell and over Red 16, Black 16a to have lunch. Up the Horberg for some class conditions and back on ourselves to end up in Vorderlanersbach for some apres-ski at the Hexen Kessel. A few drinks in the Tux 1 and a game of darts and its 3am, time for an early night before doing the valley the next day. 2nd April - What a day, ankle still hurting but head in the clouds (not literally as there were none). Eggalm, Rastogkell, Horberg, Penken down to the Hof and up the Ahorn for the long run down at the end of the day. Several Bit Sun's in the sun before the Snowboming Street Party. A special mention to Lucy who works for Virgin Atlantic for being the cutest girl in Mayrhofen, and to LuLu from Glasgow who lent me her Zippy to go raving and fondling people in the crowd ) Back to the hotel, change out our ski clothes (12.30am) and off to the club for a cheeky nightcap or 3. 3rd of April - 8.00am - Packed, changed and breakfasted by 8am, Family Kirchler again being saints and allowing a 4pm checkout. Up the Tux to confront exactly the same experience at a much lower speed in the same place. The consistancy of the piste changed dramatically at a certain altitude and slowed you considerably. Fortunately I was taking it steady and did not repeat my best gymnastics ) Happy to know what had done me the first time I carried on for a great day with some good off piste on the Glacier, even pursuading a cautious friend to come with me on his skis. Despite his absolutely disgraceful language the boy done well and got his first off-piste-powder run done. Off the slopes at 3pm, on the train at 5.30pm and back home by 1am. Another good holiday, still feeling the ankle but a happy boy none the less. tino |

My name is tino and I am not going to Val Cenis, but I will be sneaking a long weekend on a glacier in May then going to Portillo in July (sorry Lynn). I like red wine too, in fact I am enjoying a cheeky wee Merlot right now.

Never used 'em mate, soz. I once flew from Chattanooga to Atlanta on a wee Fokker or some such and was horrified to find half my seat occupied by the fella by the window, when I got on. I pointed out my distress to the stewardess she kindly suggested I get the next flight!?!!?!?!?! |
