AlleyG, i think i finally tracked the soap flakes from the Co-op. there is a warning on the box saying 'do not use softener for washing waterproofs or breathable fabric since artificially softened water may adversely affect the fabric'. if anyone is using soap flakes be careful of how much you use (sparingly) otherwise soap suds all over the floor. hope this helps.

My jackets and sallos have all been washed with normal washing detergent and they all remain waterproof.... three years and running!

I do put them in on the temperature written on the label and hang them out to dry but no issues to date.

Bought a North Face Summit series jacket in Chamonix and the shop recommended tumble drying to restore the waterproof and breathability, recommended the same thing when I bought Alpha salo's in Ireland
