I just read this great little tip for packing for your hols.

"Planning a longer trip? You'll probably have to check at least one of your bags - usually your ski bag. Buy a good quality, two-pair ski bag like the High Sierra Ski and Snowboard Bag or their "wheeled" double snowboard bag, but bring just one pair of skis. You can fill the rest of the bag with things like outer garments, iPods and extra clothes"

iPods!!!! How much space are they hoping to save? Or on the other hand who would pack your delicate iPod in with your skis!

I have done this sort of thing for years, but sadly it seems that the airlines are starting to get a bit anti this.

I have not flown with skis for the last 3 years, and that was to Canada, but can anyone comment on more recent seasons in Europe. Are the airlines starting to try and stop this practice?

I see that a lot of TO conditions specifically tell you not to do this now.

When we flew last yr my friend only took his board bag and packed his clothes inside that..... The airline wasn't impressed at all and said they were putting a stop to it....

Would be interesting to hear other people thoughts and stories on this..

Europe. Whatever airline I have used (Jet2, Thomas Cook, First Choice, Thomson, Monarch) they all say they have rules and regs on baggage, in particular skis. I have always had a suitcase weighing 20kg and a ski bag with one pair of skis, and all my ski clothes packed into it. It has been weighed once, at Grenoble Airport, and no one batted an eye lid when it came up at 18kg, and no one has ever asked me to open it to prove whats in it.
I pay my ski carriage, and I take what I want. As long as they get their £35 they seem happy. Bottom line is, whatever the plane weighs, they fuel it accordingly.
I haven't used Easyjet or Ryanair for skiing, or been to the States so I cant comment on them, but the charters all seem to be be pretty relaxed as long as you dont take the preverbial.

If you put all your luggage in 1 bag, and pay for that bag, I don't see the issue. As long as everything in the bag is legal, and meets weight limits, the airline should have no say in what the bag contains. It's all well and good TO's saying ski kit only, however the airlines baggage handlers do not take care with ski kit, and until they do, protect your kit!

I have seen these threads a few times before, i didn't mean to start another.
I though it was amusing that the guy thought it a good idea to pad your ipod in with your skis.
