Hi everyone, im looking for a new pair of all mountain skis for the coming season/s, after a trip to my recent Ellis brigham store and a lengthly discussion with a very helpful member of staff he has advised that the Salomon Tornado Ti 2011 ski would be great for me. He also pointed out the Salomon Lord, Scott Punisher.
They havent got the Tornado test ski in yet so i haven't managed to actually ski this ski. Out of the 3 i prefer the look of the Tornado and from talking to the chap he said its a more evenly matched 50/50 ski...
Have any of you got or used this ski before and what are your thoughts on it? After looking around on the internet reading reviews etc alot of places say this ski is for experts, how true is that and will it be too good for me? Id class myself as an lower advanced skier, i can carve ok but still looking to improve off piste and on moguls etc hence why i want an AM ski.
If any of you can advise of any other AM skis that i should consider then it would greatly appreaciated
Thanks very much..

Yes, skied about 15 days on Tornado Tis in varied conditions - bloody brilliant all-mountain ski IMHO. :D
From what you say of your ability I think it will be just what you need to progress. It's certainly more of a technical ski than an "easy carver" so you may find it stretches you at first but when you get it right you'll love the feedback and responsiveness.
You might be able to find last year's model on sale somewhere which could save you some cash over the 2011 version.
FWIW, I'd probably drop the Lord from your shortlist - I found them great in powder but pretty mundane everywhere else and wouldn't class them as an AM ski.
HTH, let us know how you get on...

Thanks for the info. You confirm what everyone in the reviews says about them. I agree with you about the lords, I read there better off piste than on. Ideally I will ski mainly piste but I want the option of skiing pow if I can without having to worry about the skis. I'm hoping to test a pair later this yr so I'll let you know what I think.

Got Tornado Ti's last year and they are a great ski. At speed though they get abit flappy (squirelly) at the tip.
I took 3 pairs out at EB's and the Ti's were the best for me, prob the same type of skier as yourself.

Speaking of floppy tips, a 1 or 2 degree angle on the edge can solve this problem, and helps them roll onto their edge while carving. This ski loves to carve.
Personally, I would recommend hunting down the '09 model. The ski is the same on the inside (this is the first line which used a wood core, as opposed to the monofoam used in the '07 and '08 models), has a much more pleasing look, and will leave you with a bit more money in your pocket. They may be softer, though. I haven't tried the 2011 models, obviously.

I've skied on the Tornado a couple of times, both the old 09 model and the new version, both were great skis. So much so that I took delivery of a pair today.
You should look into the new Powerline (PL) version of the Tornado which is new for this season - this is the ski i've bought. It has a dampening layer in the ski. By chance, I got to ski on the new 2011 Tornado Ti PL in March. They were just amazing skis! On the piste there was so much grip it was unbelievable and they were as snooth as silk. They're quite stiff so you have to push them but the rewards are there. At the time, I didn't know I was on the 2011 ski until I took them back to the shop, tried to buy them and they said no. I did have my suspicions at the time since the 2010 Ti was white (as it is this year) and the skis I had were black.
I wouldn't bother seaking out the old 09 model. IMO they're not as good as the new model - they feel more like a piste carving ski than a true AM ski. Loads of zip our of the turn, so much so that when I went out on a pair in the 08/09 season, they zapped my legs pretty quickly. I think the new design with more underfoot and a longer turn radius fit the AM category better.
Anyway, with my new purchase, bring on the snow is all I can say because I know what's in store for me this coming season!

hi there this is my first post so hi to you all. i have been skiing now for about six year and i rented my skis at first but dicided to buy my own in 2009 my brother in law is an instructor in wengen and he advised me to buy the tornado ski not the ti as may have been a bit to stiff the wood core has been fantastic compared to the monocore, my confidence has gone through the roof learnt to push on with my carving turns the ski seems to do all the work i am now skiing red runs and now looking to hunt out some blacks this season , i even did a little off piste and they handled it fine in my opinion this ski is a great all mountin ski for the intermidiate skier to push forward with ability and tecnique hope this helps. sorry im 6'2 and i purchased the 170 i looked at the 162 but was told the tips would be unstable at speed.
