Take a small amount to get you by on arrival, then use a debit card in the local ATM.You get a better exchange rate than any bank/hotel etc and usually only get charged £1.50 per transaction-so work out your spendos for the week and bobs yer uncle.Been doing this for years and have yet to hear a better way,Steve.

The £1.50 only applies to purchases on the card. If you withdraw cash from an ATM you'll be charged the £1.50 plus a percentage of the cash withdrawn. Some banks charge 3%!!
Have a look at Martin Lewis' website http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money for the best advice.

No no no, the charge you mean is for using a credit card in an ATM.I mean using a switch/delta debit type,no % charge at all.I have been doing this for at least 6yrs and in Italy, never been charged more than £1.50 per transaction, sometimes no charge at all- Banco Lombardia in Livigno comes to mind.

Probably better to exchange before you leave - that way you only pay the charge once.
The exchange rate from an ATM will be worse than at home plus if you pay £1.50 per transaction then you are losing 3% on 50 quid or 1.5% on 100.

MSE web site has a list of 28 UK banks and all of their charges for use of debit cards. All but one charge a fee plus a percentage for cash withdrawls.

You guys must use even more money grabbing b*****ds banking companies than me as I can assure you of my previous posts.I use a Halifax card cash visa electron, the same one that Ryanair dont charge for using and the very reason(the only reason)I opened this account for.You dont get charged for using an ATM at home and its the same abroad, apart from the handling fee of £1.50.I suggest you get one before your next trip.

Check with your bank to find out the rate on debit cards as they all differ.
If you have a nationwide current account they just charge you the interbank rate only so cheap for us.
Do not use credit cards as these rip u off
have a look on moneysavingexpert as i think there is plenty of guidance on this.
