Is Chamrousse any good?

In reality, if you are skiing with the kids then there is enough skiing for a week.[i] There was for us as we skied in the morning ourselves and with thchildren after ski school and it worked well.
If km is the key criteria and you want lots, its not your choice......but you will be paying more. The age old trade off!
You can get a good feel for the independant market from figures from the tourist boards and lift companies - you can then cross compare with the stats from the low cost carriers and the ferry companies which gets you quite close to the number...of course, there will then be some tour operator bias on that but the report is after all, a bit of PR to boost skiing!!
Any suggestions?

I skiied Chamrousse with the kids last year and it is excellent value - one of the real benefits is the very short transfer from Grenoble and when taking the children this really matters. There are some excellent prices for the resort as well and the Domaine de L'Arselle is great but....Balcons de Recoins is even better, I think

Alpe D'Huez is very festive at Christmas and if you head for a catered chalet, the hosts will have the tree and decoration and all that to make it special for the family.
Christmas in a ski resort is a real treat and its great not to have to cook the dinner or wash up the dishes!

depends what car you have - if the wheels are pretty standard, you can buy in resort easily (and generally cheaper).
Hire vs buy depends on how often you drive to resort and how often you change your car - as they may not fit the next car

Best one on the mountain is actually in Claviere at the Mon Soleil restaurant (if you like your hot chocolate thick) otherwise in resort we suggest Le Relax
