Sorry Owen but I have no need for a quick release pole they have been about for a few years now

Fair point. Maybe sir would like the version with built in hip flask more. (I kid you not!)

I'll take that as a no then! :D

Or perhaps nobody wants to talk to me

Hi NIIIXSY.

I've been to St Jean D'Ulps the last two years.

The previous year I rented from "Muffat Sport". Skis were damn nearly new and if you liked them you could purchase the same model in their shop. Skis were ready waiting for us with our name tags on them when we walked in at 8pm the day before our rental started. Later in the week my step father had a pole stolen when we had lunch. Returning to the shop we expected an outrageous charge. Instead the owner gave a French shrug and declared it to be his problem not ours and simply handed over another pole!

This year we rented from "Au Schuss". I was intending being a bit more serious this year so had bought some boots and gone for their 5* hire ski (a Dynastar Sultan 80, 2010 or equivalent.) They gave me a battered 2006 ski that did indeed allow snow to stick to the bottom if you stood still. Edges were in no danger of damaging my romper suit when carried over the shoulder. Worse still they insisted that helmets that were so large they could slide of the top of your head were correct. (Leaving the chin-strap round one's throat.) My first time with a helmet and it stayed in the chalet. This time we waited in line like sweaty cattle then the child setting the bindings didn't even use our weights or ability, just seemed to put them in the middle... They were cheaper than Muffat; now I know why.

So to anyone going to St. Jean, not all hire shops are equal.

Both rental were over the internet and not direct from the shop's own web site. I think I'd want a personal reccomendation on a shop in a new resort ar at least an email from the shop as to the exact model and year of ski they would rent. None of this "or equivalent" crap.

Cheers,

Owen.

Hmm, interesting thread. I've tried to spend the money where it makes a difference.

1st set of boots this year £260

Socks - £60

2 x Ski suits and gloves - £40 (SH fleabay.)

Swore not to buy ski's but paid a lot for complete crap renting this year so may take the plunge if I can find an off season bargain... Won't carry them in a canvas sock though will use a peli hard case or similar.

Only other thing I'll willingly spend on are decent contact lenses.

Anyone else got any bit of kit they'd hate to be without?

Owen.

You can also get gloves with the clip built in...

Howdy folks.

Has anyone here had experience of Leki's trigger 1 quick release ski poles?

I find it strange that these days you can snap on a pair of skis in a second or two but people still faff about for ages trying to force their hands between two flat nylon straps on their poles. (As you may have gathered I'm not the most tolerant of chaps on the planet…)

The quick release that Leki use looks good at first glance so I wondered if anyone here used them or if there are other alternatives? (Please do not suggest an ironing board in lieu of skis  I'm not ready to become one of those yet.)

Cheers,

Owen.
skiingproject wrote:1) please describe (if you can)the technique you use when skiing.

Not sure really  , pretty much self taught after a few lessons as a kid. (Now an old git of 37.) Lower intermediate probably as I enjoy blasting blues or trying to develop better technique on reds.

skiingproject wrote:2) do you warm up before skiing :?:
Not before but I treat the first run of the day as a means of loosening up. No thinking about technique just getting my skiing legs back under me.

skiingproject wrote:3) if you do warm up before skiing then what do you do :?:

N/A

skiingproject wrote:4) do you stretch before skiing :?:
Nope. Always did before rugby or karate but not before skiing. Probably because normal skiing will keep the range of movement well within the natural range that my joints are happy to cope with. (The joy of staying fairly flexible 20 years after becoming flexible.)

Good luck with the project. If you ever do a follow up on what people do for ski fitness I'd love to read it. Having once tried to train for rugby by cycling over the summer holidays it became clear that exercising the correct muscle groups was the key, I soon found out that cycling fitness has sod all to do with running fitness!

Owen.

Funny, in a round about kind of way...
