Many hire shops will palm you off with some poorly serviced inferior skis, especially if you've booked with a TO, and it's late in the season. At least with your own skis, if they're not in good nick, you've only got yourself to blame.
Boots are a definite though. Buy them in resort, may cost more, but can usually get to hire a new pair on the basis that you'll buy if you like them. They'll take real good care of you on this basis, and will adjust/tweak to your exact needs during the holiday.

They will only palm you if off with older poor condition ski's if you let them, do not accept them.

The reason is, I like planning an adventure and secondly I always feel ripped off by the tour operators, and thirdly over the years we have had drunks on the plane, people being sick on the transfer bus, all detracts from the tour operator experience. Not for me. :)

I used to enjoy that, all that fantastic kit going into the car and the feeling of anticipation. In fact, we're blowing this gaffe next week and I supposed to be throwing all the kit that's crept back here into the car now and not typing this.....

ise, where are you off to ????

Ski + Spa Resort in Italy

Thats a shame as Bormio is a beautiful resort full of character, but I guess they have a world cup downhill on the 28th so not surprised.
I wonder what the resorts will be thinking, will the restaurants drop there prices to encourage us away from self catering I don't think so , so will we hear hard luck stories from retailers of people not spending in resorts, we will all have a budget to spend so I'm thinking that I might not eat out as often as I would normally do, I can't see me missing the mountain lunch time so I will eat out in the evening less often. So resort restaurants will suffer. Will they bury there heads in the sand, I wonder?

Well its either that or dont go, which isnt really an option.

Don't even mention that word "don't go " it's bad enough now counting down the days, checking forecasts, webcams daily. Get past the new year and it's only three weeks.
