Are the lifts still running by then?

No I'm hiking back country down your way

I've skied serre che 3 weeks later than this before in knee deep powder.

Many European resorts tie their lift openings to public holidays. This winter, there is an early Easter, therefore early closure. It's a short season.

Your powder was knee deep because your skis are so skinny :P

Any idea how far it is by cab from Geneva to Zermatt? I've got a contact ready to pick me up for Cervinia instead, but its about three hours drive I hear.

A cab from GVA to Zermatt will be quite seriously expensive and take 3 hours+ to get as far as Tasch, then you'll have to get the train. Much better to take the train GVA to Visp, then change for Zermatt. If money is no object, enquire about a Helicopter transfer, much quicker.

Train takes three and a half to four hours.
chamonix oh dear it that time again.

If the lift co.s keep the lifts closed, then they will get less customers for sure. Hotels will get less stays, restaurants will see less turnover ...and on and on.

Skiers, won't stop skiing, they will just go someplace that welcomes their biz.
If it's Zermatt though, they might take Sandwiches -)

Tonypants, many drivers in France (and Spain) hang the Hi-Vis vests over the back of the front seats, so they are immediately visible to the Police -)
