Warm Baselayers
Started by User in Ski Hardware, 6 Replies
I'm a cold person and wear up to 4 layers under my 'fleece' under my coat. What I'm never sure of is which type to have next to my skin, is it the 'sportsy' technical layer or a thermal layer? It's not often I sweat (only when in Austria and I have to walk up a steep hill and climb steps to get to the first lift of the day .)
Flaine - any hints?

La Plagne was alright, not my favourite place, but that's not to say we didn't enjoy ourselves. We stayed at Aime La Plagne and chose that because it was the highest, staying at the MGM Les Hauts Bois. With hindsight, highest was not the best option, we should have gone for more central, as highest also meant furthest away from everything. But that hotel was the most ski-in / ski-out hotel I've been in.
That holiday was a bit of a lazy one for us, we weren'?t quite up to red standard and it would be 11 o'clock before we ventured out. But we would ski right through and you really noticed the difference between 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock when ski school started back up.
It's a long way to the Vanois Express so we only got a La Plagne ski pass.
We enjoyed the slopes above Plagne Centre and on the one day we went as far as Belle Plagne (on a lesson) we planned to go back there but didn't because it snowed too much.
We went looking for nightlife twice and didn't really find any. It's all too spread out.
Even though I wouldn't choose to go back there, there is certainly plenty of pistes and lots of skiing to be done and I may think of Les Arcs next year with a plan to pop over to do the bits we missed

Thanks for the advice, I am staying in the P+V at Foret too. I think I got my head round the piste map / village map, am I right in thinking that the nearest (big) lift is Grand Vans? Is the P+V 'ski in ski out'? If I've got my bearings right, is it easy enough to get to the Grand Platiers lift across town?

We did La Plagne 2 years ago (and Les Menures last year) so seem to be working through the 'ugliest resort' list too.
Helmets

I'm a helmet wearer.
After a fall where my skis travelled faster than my upperbody and my head hit the floor and bounced off a flattish icy piste, I immediately hired one for the remainder of the holiday and bought one for the next holiday.
I had whiplash for a few months after.
It probably won't protect me from breaking my leg or arm, but since I am still nervous when having to ski fast to get the momentum to go over a hill, I shall always wear it.
And since it's a horrid powder blue colour with stick on ears, the rest of the party will not lose me.

Oo yes please.
There's some great panoramic pictures on the grand massif website (click in webcams at the top, then on 'cliquez ici' under 'Flaine' - which shows there's no snow today :( (although doesn't j2ski say there's going to be 81cm this week :P)
also more panoramics]

But there's nothing like someone's recommendations who's actually been there.
We are staying in Flaine Foret, so let me know which bars / restaurants are the best.
And have a great time

I'm booked to go to Flaine next February.
Anyone been there?
Do you recommend any areas on the Grand Massif in particular.
We are intermediates and are up to 'not too vicious' reds.

Just found this forum and it looks great.
thanks
FIRST TIMERS

I would thoroughly recommend to any first timer to have a few lessons before your holiday.

Before skiing for the first time we had six lessons and that was a lifesaver, because our skiing holiday was so late in the year that ski school had finished, so it was just us and the snow

It may be miserable and hard work, but at least it will be miserable in this country and not on your holiday.
And then being on snow is so much easier. :P

But whatever you choose, you will have a fantastic time
