Thanks for the replies so far .
Hamish i've never driven in snow chains before,i am an experienced driver,does everyone use them????

Staying next to the slopes or very near them is fairly important for me and my two kids ,it just seems a bit easier.
I dont mind the driving 9 hrs in a car is a long time but i would take it steady and would stop somewhere.
The plane thing is just becoming a hassle and it just seems easier to get in a car and drive.

i have been to Austria for the past couple of years and wanted to try La Plagne this time.
We usually fly and get a Hotel wich is great but it seems to cost mega bucks so i wanted to get the price down.So i wanted to drive to the Alps and get an appartment in La Plagne .As always its difficult choosing accommodation, its got to be right on the slopes, and is the driving thing complete hell.
Iwould really appreciate anybodies experience of doing a ski hol this way

thinking about next years hols and i usually book a hol months in advance but i have been talking to lots of people and they say do it last minute and you will get a much better deal and can follow the snow any thought

I,m the same about France ,Austria was such a lovely place that we all fell in love with where we were.After seeing French resorts and hearing about it ,it does,nt appeal to me

Hi everyone
went to westendorf this year as first time skiers and had a great time, kids loved it. I know this year was a bit odd with snow but we hit lucky and got loads. We are now looking at next years holiday and would love to go back to Westendorf but if snow is going to become scarce lower down should i be looking at a higher resort ,have been looking at Obergurglor or Ischgl but i keep being drawn back to Westendorf any thoughts

We hired coats and bottoms this year and we wanted to buy our own stuff for next year can anyone tell me the best time to buy and any good sites on the internet
