Massive Avalanche Cuts Off Zermat

Trains to Zermatt are running again and the road from Visp to Täsch has been reopened, but the road to Saas Fee is still closed.

If you are travelling in CH this weekend you can check the situation via these links:

Roads: http://www.tcs.ch/main/de/home/verkehrsinfo/strassenzustand.html unfortunately only in DE, FR and IT but there is an English smartphone app.

Rail: http://www.sbb.ch/en/timetable/rail-traffic-information.html
Massive Avalanche Cuts Off Zermat

It appears that a piece of the Weisshorn glacier above Randa broke off causing a powder avalanche. Three vehicles were caught in it and an uninhabited building was damaged, but nobody was hurt. The air blast that preceded it brought down some power lines. Power has now been restored but the road and railway through Randa remain closed because of the danger of further avalanches. Saas Grund, Saas Fee and Saas Almagell are also cut off, as is the Lötschental.

Wind speeds of up to 270 km/h have been recorded (the second highest ever in Switzerland).

Hi Bluenatic, welcome to CH. The sales are on at the moment so you might pick up a bargain. The best places to try are the large sports chains such as Ochsner Sport and Athleticum. The DIY stores and the sports depts. in the supermarkets and department stores also sell skis. You could always rent until you find your feet again, for CHF 169 Ochsner Sport https://www.ochsnersport.ch/content/rent-ready will rent you a pair of basic skis for the rest of the season.
MeteoSwiss have issued a severe weather warning (level 3) for tomorrow and Friday. They are expecting at least 40-80cm of snow and winds of over 150 km/h in the mountains.

Saas Fee and Zermatt had to close most of their lifts due to high winds at lunchtime today.

Looks like something went wrong with your search (assuming you are travelling on a Saturday)

If your flight is on time and you only have hand luggage you might just be able to get the 9:47.

First class carriages have a yellow stripe on the door.

If you really want to get some skiing in, you could get a taxi from Sion to Nendez for 80 Francs http://www.taxifollonier.ch/tarif-sion-en.htm.
OmanSki, you didn't mention which version of the Chip you hired the 71 or the 66; if it was the 71 then it has the same dimensions as the Head Magnum. The Titan is a bit wider underfoot making it a bit more manageable off-piste. If you ski mainly on-piste then the Magnum would be a better choice.

Of the others I would also go for the Salomon 24 hrs.

Mrs SB along with all her friends here also doesn't ski on women's skis, there are some good ones around these days but previously they were pretty ropey.

If you go back to Zermatt sometime try to hire a pair of RTC (ready to carve) skis http://www.rtc-ski.ch/ there're made locally and are used by lots of good women skiers here.
