You can always go back and ask for different skis mid week as this will give you more of an idea of what you do ad don't like in skis for the next time around.....

isn't it a problem that most people don't what the difference is between skis though? I don't think I would. And in most shops they are most likely to hand you whatever they have?

I've got to say some of our local stores have a amazing cheek with the skis they're sending some people out on, conversely, there's a large Belgium company with their own skis and they seem perfectly matched to the majority of their guests.

I'd have guessed if you went to somewhere the rental stores recommended on J2Ski (with discount) you might get the right stuff though.

Before it does, I can honestly say I have not seen anything on this site that can be regarded as offensive. Differences of opinion? Yes.

i know you were probably not making that as a suggestion but this should be locked.

This site has been much the poorer for the loss of Trencher and Jan, caused in both cases, by people being offensive. It is much easier to be kindly to each other.

Both were highly offensive in their more recent posts, the fact some of the posts had to removed and aren't available as a record of that doesn't really alter it. At least one of them went on to send a few petulant PM's which really speaks for itself.
Skiing down the fall line!!!

daved wrote:I always ski down the fall line and use "hockey" stops...I just thought that was what you did... the idea is to go straight down as fast as you dare...but then I do ski like Desperate Dan

Depends what you want to do, for me the idea is to go down under control picking my speed and line myself with a fairly constant speed being my preference, a nice turn shape carved out means you're not needing to dump speed with the drama and exertion of hockey stopping. Not that there's anything wrong with hockey stopping, or better called speed checking in this context, it's one of a range of techniques you're going to want to have available to deal with different slopes.
Best ski resort for non- skiers

many :D someone else was asking a similar question as well. I think it's more common than people imagine that someone wants to go on a winter holiday and not ski.

There's certainly places where skiing is just one of the activities on offer. How seriously does she want to walk? Strolls for an hour or so or something a bit bigger, half or full day treks?

You can look on http://www.sentiers-raquettes.com/default.asp to get an idea who has a lot of trails for snow shoes, for longer stuff you need to find an accompagnateur who get more into the back country.

I'm a keen snow shoer myself and I've some blog stuff : http://snowslider.net/tag/snow-shoeing/
Help please. General advice needed.

marmite wrote:I would really like to take my children (12 & 8) to a snowy resort for a week after next Christmas. Unfortunately, I don't fly so wanted to find out where would be a good place to drive to from the UK where snow would be guaranteed. The nearer the better, to cut down on driving/petrol etc. Somewhere pretty and not too commercial. We're not skiers (yet) so really just want snow play and nice food. Any advice gratefully received.

The alps has a lot of villages as you describe, even though they're not major ski destinations though you'll find them busy over the new year period as in Europe the idea of a non-ski winter break is pretty well established.

Are you intending to ski at all or are you going to mooch around, try some snow shoeing and stuff? It would effect your choice of course.

Ise, it seems as if there's a chip on your shoulder.

that's a quality contribution  There's a number of posters here who seem to think they can be just as personally offensive as they like and for some reason it doesn't count.
