not a lot of calories in snow so you'll be fine

Hopefully, I will get to eat lots of wonderful french cuisine as well to provide all the calories I will need to provide the fuel for all the powder skiing

While it is always risky to book several months in advance, its usually the way we have to do it from Ireland or UK if we want to head to a particular resort or accommodation or are stuck with certain dates, because of work or schools. This is especially true if travelling with a larger group :x

That's why high snow-sure resorts in Europe do so well and get to charge a hefty premium for the privilege

I booked months ago. 4 weeks ago, there was not a snowflake anywhere on the mountain and I began to get a bit nervous. However, the J2ski snow-dancers have been very busy and there is now buckets of snow all through the alps in plenty of time for my trip tomorrow

Now all I have to do is see if I can put your wonderful poetic advice on skiing powder into action

.... probably none! Flying out in the morning to La Plagne but, based on past experience, I am unlikely to get any sleep tonight with the excitement

Its like waiting for Santa all over again

Conditions look amazing if we could just get some sunshine - another 50 cm today

Rubbish in the fluffy stuff so will probably end up eating lots of snow

TO all of you who have been conducting snow dances since early Autumn, thank you for bringing wonderful snow :D .

However, I am heading out on Saturday and the continuing snow is now in danger of being too much. Can you please now take a rest so we can have a few bluebird days
Soll update and news.

Any recommendations in terms of best village to stay in as I read Soll isnt so easy to get out of in the mornings?

Tony

I think you would enjoy Soll and the skiwelt. The skiing is very extensive and varied. My only quibble is that many of the runs are relatively short.

While it is low and may not enjoy the highest snow falls, it does compensate with very good piste maintenance and extensive snow making. I have been there when there hasn't been snow for ages and the pistes were still in good condition.

Soll probably has the best selection of bars and restaurants and is a great base to ski the area. Access is fine and unlikely to present any problems other than in the most busy weeks. From what I have heard about Mayrhofen that would be far worse.
Great tips as usual Pav.

People often query whether it is worth doing an introductory course on dry slopes before their 1st trip. My own experience is that a couple of lessons on a dry slope covered the type of basics that you have identified

This saved us a lot of hardship on our 1st trip. In fact, our instructor on that trip, a young Austrian man, missed some really basic points, like only turning while faced downhill because he had literally been on skis as soon as he could walk and had no memory of ever strugging with such a basic concept

It took him ages to spot that several members of the class were getting some really basic things wrong
Skiing Powder

In recent years, it seems like the pistes have been fairly hard packed and off-piste completely tracked out. So I haven't really been on powder for quite some time.

I'm off next Saturday and with the recent snow falls, I presume there may still be some powder about.

My problem is, I don't really know what to do in the powder

From memory, I think I am supposed to have my weight slightly further back and not force turns but any ohter tips on what I should be doing?
As far as I know this is a very unusual year in that there was absolutely no snow until 3 weeks ago and now there is a huge amount.

Does this mean that the snow will be even more unstable than normal? Are there any additional precautions that I should be taking. Generally I stick to marked pistes or recognised routes so nothing too adventurous.

I am off on Saturday and a bit concerned that it may be considerably more dangerous than usual :(
