What exactly is a catered chalet?

You will be mixing with the others in the chalet, all eating around the same table. I've not had a bad experience yet. Most skiiers are like minded, and mix well.

This description mirrors my experience.

You all eat at the same table which at first can be a bit awkward but great fun once you get to know the other people.

Pablo - you can still eat a squashed sandwich ;)

Why would you advise so against skiing with a backpack?

My backpack meant I barely spent any money all week - just a little on ham bread and cheese, took the rest of the stuff from home.

do my eyes deceive me?

Sorry?

Im not sure what you are trying to say.

BTW I dont mean a full size hiking bag, just a small backpack.

I prefer to ski witha rucksack, well not coz the skiing is better but theres so many useful things to carry:

Water.
Fruit juice (sugar can ne nice but beware of carrying fizzy juice!)
Snickers (chocolate and peanuts for energy)
Cereal bars
A small flask with a hot drink / cuppa soup (stays hot/warm for hours!)
sandwiches (save a fortune on lunch)
goggles
sunglasses
extra layer of clothing / scarf / neck thing

cant think of anything else. seemed like more at the time

Is it just me, or does the list of stuff you have to remember before you head out for the day simply impossibly long?

IMO - Not at all. A little preparation meant I was up at 7:30-8:00, on the lift by 9:30 and back at the chalet by 5, only with a short stop to have my sandwich and soup (20 mins or so). The rest of the snacks were for on the lifts.

Eyewear and scarf/hat allways stay in the bag. All I needed to do was make sandwiches, boil kettle, full up flask, water bottle, juice bottle, chuck a couple of cereal bars in the bag - finito.

Pablo - you can still eat a squashed sandwich ;)

yeah very true (i dont drive)

its just the way things work out - hoping to ski valentines with my girlfriend - due to various constraints it has to be a day trip

also, my friend has accom in aviemore and has envited me out on tues/wed (17th/18th) which i wasnt planning, but ive not seen him for a while so seems like a good reason to see him and excuse to ski! (but i think its half term so probably be busy...)

only thing to consider i think its trying to convince the other half that we should try and sort out a lift via winterhighland

shes not keen on travelling with people we dont know but i think it would be fun!
