Unexpected World Cup Weekend in Åre
Started by User in Ski News, 2 Replies
If you're watching the men's slalom on Sunday keep an eye out for the young Swiss racer Daniel Yule. Yule is not a Swiss surname.
Ischgul is currently reporting 40cm, Madonna di Campiglio 75cm and Sulden 90cm.
At the moment the resorts south of the main alpine ridge have more snow.
I would look at Madonna di Campiglio http://www.campigliodolomiti.it/homepage and Sulden am Ortler http://www.seilbahnensulden.it/Englisch/ Most places have special offers at this time of year http://www.campigliodolomiti.it/lang/EN/eventi/cerca/std_id_categoria=8|limit=10|ref=top.html http://www.ortlergebiet.it/en/current-offers/winter.html They are about 4 – 4.5 hrs drive from Salzburg airport.
Geneva to Zinal transport 3rd January

Yes, train to Sierre and bus to Zinal. When you come through customs at Geneva airport turn left and keep walking until you come to a large revolving door, go through it to get to the station. When you get to Sierre take the bus to Vissoie and from there a bus to Zinal. If I were you I would get a Swiss Transfer Ticket.

You need to buy a ticket from Geneva airport to Zinal (there is a railway station at the airport), the full price for a return ticket at the moment is CHF 148.40. The winter timetable comes into force on 14th Dec., at the same time ticket prices will increase by an average of 2.3%. You might be able to buy a Supersaver ticket nearer the time http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and-tickets/tickets-for-switzerland/supersaver-tickets.html

For CHF 139 you can buy a Swiss Transfer Ticket which will get you from the airport to Zinal and back http://www.sbb.ch/en/leisure-holidays/holidays--short-breaks-in-switzerland/swisstravelsystem/swiss-transfer.html you must buy it in advance from outside Switzerland.

If you fly with this outfit you might well have to put your ski bag in the cabin http://www.lunajets.com/en/destinations/private-jet-zermatt/
Where to go from Geneva next week?

Very surprised that you had trouble finding accommodation, did you look at the Cervinia website or the Valle d'Aosta tourism website http://www.lovevda.it/en/database/4/ski-snowboarding/aosta-valley/cervinia-4-day-special/2611 ? Most places have special deals at this time of year to try and drum up business. If you look on the webcams there is hardly anyone there at the moment, in spite of excellent snow cover and all the lifts being open.

Keep an eye on the forecast, it might be very cold at the end of next week.
You could just use public transport, 2hrs 30min and €27 each way. Austrian railways also do combined rail / ski pass tickets, if you show the ticket at an Intersport shop you will also get 10% off ski hire http://kombitickets.railtours.at/kombitickets-wintersport/austria/ischgl/ischgl.html
