I suggest you hire a personal instructor for your child. Multiple ski resorts offers lessons on some cases just like yours. They could guide your child while skiing.
Learning ski at home may be inexpensive but it wouldn't be of much help. I suggest you actually go for it and take lessons at a ski school. Some ski resorts offers lessons for beginners and they could guide you along while hitting the slopes.

I think your mom will still have the guts and strength to ski. Based from your post, I think your mom is physically fit. Skiing could really help your mom improve her flexibility and balance. Try to take her to lessons. There are ski resorts which offers lessons at any age. )

There are many ski resorts to choose from in the US particularly in Colorado, California and Utah. Best Examples would be in Deer Valley and Alta in Utah and Winter Park in Colorado. Aside from skiing, you could also try other activities they offered there. They also offered lessons for beginners so you don't have to worry about a thing.
