Thanks again to everyone, especiially Swingbeep - that diagram really helped along with the Youtube extracts. Anyone else looking to buy should also watch the skidotcom youtube videos - they're really clear - and some basic but clear advice can be seen on http://www.alpineaccessories.com/bootselection.html.

The thing I was trying to explain was "forward lean" - as the two boots I was looking at had different amounts, with the Salomon much more inclined than the upright Atomic. Will look at this whne I buy the boots today.

I whave changed my mind about the size and will go with the smaller - this is what all the bootfitters in these videos have said.
Wish me luck at the shop today!

Thanks

Thank you all so much fopr the advice.

I've decided on the basis of what you have all told me to buy the boots I feel most comfortable in, and which without all the conflicting "guff" the fitters tell me, I would instinctively buy.

This will be the Atomic in the larger size -

Ally - the two different sizes recommended to me were for exactly the same boot at two different shops.

Thanks again - I'm looking forward to the holiday!

Thanks Ally

Your report on buying is really useful, and very similar to the process I am going through myself.

The advice I hope I might get is not whether the boot is comfy or not (both are), but the Salomon is angled forward so that I am continually flexed forward when I walk in them - the Atomic allows me to walk upright without flexing.

Which is better for improving skiing?

Also - should they be very tight at the beginnig? I have had two different fittings and they recommended 2 different sizes :( !
I am in my fifties and started skiing 2 years ago - I have done 2 weeks skiing in total. I'm a real beginner, not very good, very nervous - but want to improve.

I thought I would treat myself to a pair of boots this year to give myself the best chance of doing that. The choice is between a pair of Atomic Hawk 80 and Salomon Idol CS.

They're both very comfortable - the Atomic is an upright boot and easy to walk in - the Salomon is more angled and makes me bend my knees forward in a flexed position, but are less comfortable to walk in upright because of this.

My big problem on the slopes is not bending my knees enough and leaning back too far – so wondered whether the Salomons would help.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm really sorry for the last post ( though it seems to have caused you all a great deal of mirth !!) - all caused by my new Iphone which seems to have a mind of its own!

What I wanted to ask was this : we are going to Cervinia in February and I would like to organise some one to one private lessons for myself - preferably with a native English speaking instructor. I have previously used New Generation in France and thought they were great, and I wanted to find something simlar in Cervinia.

Can anyone recommend a company which provides lessons?

Thanks

No - the chap at the top of the chairlift took them off me - as I concentrated getting on the chair and remembering how to get off. There was literally no one else around ; it was late and everyone had already gone down to lunch.

As to not paying - it took them 4 days to decide not to charge me, probably because I phoned up Club med in London and talked to their customer services.

And another lesson learned - ALWAYS TAKE OUT THEIR SKI INSURANCE!

They mentioned something in French which I didn't understand when they gave me the skis, which turned out to be ski insurance for loss/breakages etc.. At 18 Euros this was a snip ; I wish I'd asked to have this explained to me in English but it was a real rush to get boots / skis / helmets for the kids / sign up for lessons / sign up for club etc, etc. and make it for dinner.
