From our weekly Snow Forecast e-mails - as sent this morning :-

The weather is at last about to change in Europe. An active frontal system looks set to push in from the Atlantic around the 1st or 2nd of January to bring significant precipitation - and falling temperatures will ensure that means snow down to the valley floor in many areas.

The best of the snow is likely to fall in the Northern French Alps, Western Austria, the Aosta Valley in Italy and Switzerland - with some areas looking good for a right pasting! Accumulations of up to a metre, for some resorts, are possible in the first few days of the New Year. The Southern Alps should get at least a top-up but it's unclear at this stage whether the weather system will bring much-needed snow to the Pyrenees and Andorra.

Even better news is that this particular system could usher in low pressure conditions likely to persist through the first half of January - so there could very well be a lot more snow over the next two weeks.

Avalanche

We'll leave you with a word of caution if you're skiing in January - the recent warm weather has left a base of potentially unstable snow; so there will likely be an elevated avalanche risk. We quote from Avalanche Expert Henry;
As I mentioned last week, once the snow does fall, the new snow layer will be on top of a very weak layer that is out there now. This weak layer is fine by itself, but once it has something on it, it is really unstable.

Still a few days to go yet - so the forecast may change completely - but it is looking rather better than it has been!

Our current Snow Report for Flaine is indicating reasonable snow cover up top at least. And the forecast is looking fairly consistent for snow around the middle of next week, across the Grand Massif, so that should improve.

That is a way out yet so it could go either way... keep watching, but if you're there for two weeks you've got a good chance of further snow before you come home (fingers crossed).

There's a good selection of Web Cam shots here showing a depressing amount of grass and a lot of snow-making in progress... but the Jasna Snow Forecast is showing a possibility of a few cms over next weekend.

Good luck...
Hi Helena, the latest Snow Forecast for St Sorlin - updating this morning - shows continuing "good" weather through the New Year weekend... :cry:
Our latest Snow Report for Vars shows 80cm (top) and snow making in progress. The forecast is for the weather to remain cold enough for snow-making over the next week too, so it's not as bad as it could be!

Hi Cal,

We have a Snow Forecast for Soldeu right here on j2ski - so you're in the right place... 8)

Right now there's a cursed High Pressure system stuck fast over much of Europe - so not much snow forecast for anywhere in the Alps over the next week. Fingers crossed that it gets bored soon and clears off... :evil:

Should you be worried? No, but keep an eye on the forecast - the current lack of snow can't/won't last for ever, and you've got two weeks to go yet. One big storm could sort it out overnight... here's hoping!

Metal -

They put some tin foil in the skis and doubled the price

:lol: :lol:

And, of course;

Wood - they took out the billion dollar composite carbon alloy sandwich wafer and replaced it with the tree from the bottom of your garden.

And doubled the price.

If only it wasn't true...
