Much too early to say for sure what the road conditions will be like, but you should definitely be prepared to use chains in late January. Your hire car will almost certainly be fitted with snow tyres at that time, which will cope with most snowy roads, but do make sure when booking. Keep an eye on our Snow Forecast for Mayhrhofen - which is currently looking a bit tasty! 8) |

Oh those leeks...
I told a similar, lengthy, story to the five-year-old daughter of a friend of mine over lunch once; all about how the moguls were where French sausages lived... she listened politely all the way through before turning to her Dad and saying "He's talking a load of rubbish - and he can't ski in moguls either". To cap it all she then told me that Santa doesn't exist! Kids today... |

Is this something to do with thick onion skins? Oh no, wrong thread... |

Hi pipp,
Ski Resorts near Geneva should give you a good start. As you're going in January, you can afford to wait until nearer the time and check the snows as they arrive - should be plenty of accommodation choices as it's not peak season. Inside two hours you've got plenty of options with nightlife - Chamonix and Verbier are among the best (for skiing and partying), though not cheap and Morzine will be fun too - though is at lower altitude. |

In a word, yes. The snows may arrive anytime from now until mid-January and it'll be nothing unusual. Historically Xmas is not guaranteed to be very snowy - though, with the exception of last season, it has been in recent years. As for this year... who knows? But... though it's mild in the Alps right now, that should give way to much colder temperatures around the middle of next week - with a good chance of a little snow too. Still early days yet, so keep an eye on the forecasts and keep your fingers crossed. Where are you going? |

Unless we're in for another late start to the season, November on the Grande Motte is likely to be cold. The other possibility is that it will be C-O-L-D. Go for a cold wax, and pay attention to your clothing as much as your skis... 8)
The upper runs (anywhere above the funicular top station / restaurant) are very exposed to any wind that may be blowing. With luck the run down to Val Claret will be open by then though, and that's more sheltered. From the latest GFS data; looks like a cold few days for the end of this month, then average temperatures (for the time of year) in the first week of November. After that... looks a fair bit colder and maybe a wee bit of precipitation too... |

He he, this is work... ...though we don't often have time to chat... Helmet? Yep, but not all the time. As light as a hat and probably warmer so goes on by default now - but I'll leave it if the snow is deep, the sun is out, the runs are quiet and we're not heading anywhere adventurous. |
