My wonderful first time ever ski in Obergurgl has ended and I'm already wondering about next winter's holiday.
I wasn't brilliant on the slopes and was restricted to gentle blues. I did progress from snow plough turns to some sort of parallel effort though I still need lots of practice ( in not falling over!!!)
So,for their second holiday what is it that people tend to do in the way of instruction????
Broken Arm - Should he go?
Started by User in Beginning Skiing, 13 Replies
Back from the skiing and my son had no problems with his arm. He had a padded protection with velcro fastener around his wrist initially but dicarded that within a couple of days. The only problem he had was on the last day when he went out of control and hurt his ankle which put paid to us skiing together on the last day. It didn't really matter as I also had done the splits and hurt my groin. So many stories to tell around the fire in the pub this afternoon. Thank you for all your replies!!!
Where? Haven't got a clue!!!

Well we are back from a wonderful week in Obergurgl. Thank you for all of your replies on a number of issues. We made some good friends and the skiing and weather were excellent!
As a first time skier it took me a long time to get my turns right but by the end of the week I was on the parallel turns. If there are 10 things to remember for a turn then I really needed to get at least 8 correct to do a proper smooth turn. I fell over more times than I can remember. What I found initially confusing was the leaning out to the downward slope on the turn as well as digging my knees in toward the slope. My heart was in my mouth so many times and often I started careering down the slope out of control!
Obergurgl was great. I just wished I could have explored the different Blue runs as most of the time I was on the easier parts of one blue. My son, also a first timer, was on Reds on day 4 and was about to be taken on a Black on the last day except the wind and visibility deteriorated and the lifts were closed. Oh to be young and fearless!!
I can't wait to go again!

Broken Arm - Should he go?

There is exactly one week to go before my student son and I go to Obergurgl. Six weeks ago he broke the radius on his right arm. It's always been stable but in cartoon terms it's a small split on the knobbly part at the top of the long bone on the thumb side!! Four days ago he had the plaster taken off but was given a velcro type replacement whereby he could take it off/put it on whenever he wished. When it's off, his wrist is quite stiff as obviously he hasn't been using it for some time. He has been given some physiotherapy exercise to do but as neither of us have been skiing before I'm wondering just how much a broken arm in the recovery stage is going to hinder him when we go. It has healed but is naturally sore to the touch. Any views?

Well I bought some of their gloves Dare2be Strada on ebay size L/XL and I'm going to have to give them to my wife. The fingers are the shortest in length I've ever seen on a glove!
