What skis for a beginner?

Snowbandit,
I used to think the colours the ski hire shops offer - blue, red and black were for beginner, intermediate and advanced and I've hired them according to that premise for several years.

However, I've recently booked some more skis, and the shop offers the same colour scheme, and then beginner etc. within each colour scheme - so that you can hire black beginners, for example. The colours in this case seem to be more about the quality of the ski and boot, and hence the cost of hiring them!.

I have still hired blue ones, though, for the member of our party who has only done one week of ski-ing, and I thought I'd see what they were like when we got there, and upgrade if I thought they weren't good enough. So, I'd suggest you do the same. The blue economy ones we've hired in the past have been perfectly adequate, and we've now moved on to paying more for the red and black ones as our ski-ing has improved.

Pavelski,
It's nice to see you back :D . I hope you enjoyed yourself testing out 20 possible marriage partners

Kate,
I'm ashamed to say that I have my daughter's friends' mobile numbers on my phone (and their mothers' numbers) so that if she forgets her phone, or the battery goes flat or whatever, I can still find out where she is and make sure she's okay.

She doesn't understand (like your son I suspect) that although she's not worried because she knows she's okay, I don't and I do worry.

Have you tried phoning the other mothers? (I know it's a bit late now, but I expect they're all worried as well).

Ally
Hasn't the school given you a contact number (it was a school trip wasn't it?). If that was my 9 year old I'd be worried as well, especially as he hasn't phoned you yet.

My 16 year old was away for a few days last week, on her own at a sort of conference, and I phoned her every day just to make sure she was okay. I know it's ridiculous, but I do worry about her.

I'm sure your son is fine, but I think it's just a mother's nature to worry about her kids.

Let me know when you have some news about him - I'm starting to worry as well now

Kate,
I'm sure they'll find a hotel somewhere. Has he phoned you yet?

Dave,
Her mother is American, and her father is Scottish, and she was brought up in Scotland, so I suppose she could have learnt a bit of Gaelic as a child, but I know she studied it when she returned to Scotland after she was at Uni with me in Wales (nearly 30 years ago now, I'm afraid to say). I am still in touch with her, and I saw her mother a few months ago. I am very proud of her for becoming fluent in Gaelic :D.

My own brother-in-law speaks Irish, and masses of people can speak Welsh - so the ancient languages of these islands are still going strong.

Maybe you could put the thread back on topic and tell us something about the history of ski-ing in Scotland? It would make pleasant bed-time reading. :D

Why Pablo I am quite shocked at you !!!  :D

My flatmate from uni speaks fluent Gaelic and in fact works for the University of the Highlands and Islands promoting Gaelic, both nationally and internationally.

And stingy - what  My great-grandfather worked as a medical missionary both abroad and in Glasgow, and the family were always short of money because he gave away his medicines to the poor of Glasgow.

I think you need to forget about whatever essay it is you are writing at the moment and start researching Scotland as a matter of priority :D.
