Daisy, my youngest will be about the same age when we go in April and we'll give him a go. There's no reason why they can't try it at that age but you do, of course, have to be very attentive to their needs and a lot will depend on how strong and patient the child is!

Small people get colder quicker, bored and tired more easily (sure you know this all already) so you need to stay one step ahead - get them inside for a hot chocolate or a snack before they get cold, stop and go sledging before they get bored and stay in warm'n'cosy if the weather's bad... 8)

If they don't enjoy it you may have to wait years before they step onto skis again...

Outrageous. I'm disappointed with you Rose. Can't you just change your holiday plans to go somewhere we already cover? 8)
Not exactly what you're after but David George, of PisteHors, does an annual review of French avalanche statistics, that's easy to read and very good at concentrating the mind on the salient points (the foremost being that "what you don't know, can kill you").

It's available in a PDF, so you can leave several lying around and replace if your guests want to take it away (which would be a good thing!). Can be reproduced for "educational purposes" which I think would cover what you have in mind but best check with David before firing up your printing press...

The analysis of the 2007/8 season can be found here.

Simply being aware that there is a danger (of death) is a great first step toward safer skiing.

Currently being held in a stack.

I have to build a third runway...
Once more we're delighted to report that substantial snow fell in the past week, most notably in Italy to give the Dolomites some impressive early depths. And we're even more delighted to report that it's set to continue.

Weather and Snow Next Week

Snow has moved into the Alps again, and will continue through Friday and Saturday for much of the major Alpine area. Heaviest falls will be in the North, although the South of the Alps should also see useful snowfall on top of a growing base.

The Pyrenees should also be in on the action again. Whilst temperatures should remain low to the North, the southern-most ski areas will likely see a brief rise in temperatures over the weekend to take the freezing line to 2,000 metres early next week. Any warming should be short-lived, however, with temperatures falling again by mid-week...

The list of early-opening resorts has grown longer, so if you're able to catch a few days before Xmas then conditions should make it worth your while - but do check your chosen resort before you travel, as quite a few of the resorts are only open at the weekends right now.

How nice... more snow! 8) 8) 8)

Posting Pictures

PLEASE NOTE :- This information was updated October 2016; it's now much easier (than it was) to include pictures in your posts on J2Ski.

You can now upload your own images directly to J2Ski; no need to host them on Flickr, etc. AND you can upload them from your PC, Tablet, your Phone or even (if you have one) your Wifi-enabled DSLR.

When you start a new Topic, Reply to an existing one or create a Private Message, you'll now see the editor toolbar looks a bit like this :-

Click Upload Pic and away you go.

Once you've added a picture to your Post, you can tag it with the name of a ski area (if relevant).

Caveat :- There are some limitations; we're only accepting JPG and PNG formats for now, they'll be cropped automatically to a max of 900 pixels wide and uploaded images must be less than 10MB in size.
Ski hire/lift passes/tuition

You'll get 20% off the walk-in price on Ski Hire through our partners SkiSet - http://www.skiset.co.uk/j2ski/ - and there are tips on picking the right skis on our Soll Ski Hire page.

For tuition, there was a recent thread on Selecting a Ski Instructor which discussed just that; best if you can find a personal recommendation.

I'd recommend private lessons for a couple of hours each day for maximum progress but group lessons if you're really pushed on budget and/or enjoy the social aspect of learning together.
