My desktop gadget is currently reporting a rate of 1.155, soon be back to 1.40+ at this rate )

Do you know which rate your desktop gadget is reporting?

There are so many different currency exchange rates - like the ones in the Post Office, your bank, the travel agents, the booths in the airport etc. That's why I was looking at the Visa rate, because that's what you'll get if you use your Visa card to purchase anything in euros while you're here or abroad, less any charges the provider of the card (Lloyds TSB in my case) might make.

The Visa rates are on here:

I hope you're right and we get back to 1.4 euros to the pound, preferably before my holiday in 3 1/2 weeks time  :D

Ski Rental... Here or There?

When I went ski-ing on the glacier at Tignes, in October, it was through a special arrangement with Edge2edge who let us use their stuff for free.

I have been hiring my skis and boots for 6 years now, and quite honestly I didn't notice any difference. I get different skis each time and I just adapt to them. In fact, I didn't like my edge2edge skis as much as I liked the ones I hired last time in Val Thorens.

Are you sure this is true, and not just a rumour, about skis and boots for hire being different to the privately owned ones?

Sm4sh,
Austria is a very good place for ski-ing, as long as you don't pick a resort that's very low and go early or late in the season. Mayrhofen is one of the best ski resorts in Austria

I think it would be true to say that we all find it very difficult picking a resort, and spend a great deal of time adding up the pros and cons of each one (and it's a lot of fun as well and keeps us busy until our next ski holiday) :D

caron-a wrote:sued, I've been given different advice by two doctors. My youngest gets extremely bad nose bleeds (usually on the slopes as well as at home), one doc told me to let it bleed and another told us to push the nose to the bone on the bleeding side about half way/two thirds up (you can feel where the nose starts to open up). I prefer the latter, it stops it within minutes. He has had it quarterised but it still happens.

So, apart from said nose bleeds, he was very ill after travelling up the funicular in Tignes to the Grande Motte (plied him with water for half an hour and came back down), he's come back from two trips with a chest infection (a two week stint of bronchitis this time) and I have to stand still for a couple of minutes at the top of every lift to wait for the nausea to subside.

why on earth do we do it

Caron-a,
that sounds really awful! I used to get lots of nose bleeds when I was a child, but they always stopped if I just put pressure on the end of my nose with toilet paper. Your poor son! I used to hate getting nose bleeds.
Is your nausea with lifts because of the altitude problem, or because you're frightened of lifts? I'm a bit confused.

Snowbandit,
Do you think maybe Caron a's got a point and you and I are being a little 'too helpful'?. I remember many years ago someone shouted at me because I was being 'too helpful'. Although I must say your price for Arinsal was amazingly good. Was that with First Choice?

I am supposed to be doing my French homework, but I am worrying about poor sm4sh and his ski holiday
