Above freezing... 8) ...quite a few areas (mostly West and South Alps) are having a mild couple of days before Xmas (when it gets cold).
Avalanches claim more lives

In addition to the incident in Chandolin, reported by Ise, Pistehors are reporting the death of a mountain guide in the Pyrenees yesterday.

On Snowheads, steilhang notes 3 fatalities from four avalanches...
Three deaths in Austria today in separate incidents. One in Damüls, one in Kleinwalsertal and one which happened yetsreday in Tirol. In the incident in Tirol the rescue teams were only able to get to the victim today!

In the incident in Damüls a 22 year old snowboarder skied into a slope that was closed for avalanche danger. His group had already skied the slope twice, but on the third run the slab released and buried one of them. None of them was wearing a transceiver!

In the incident in Kleinwalsertal a 41 year old skier skied into a popular powder run and released a slab. The avalanche situation was so extreme that the rescue services had to dynamite the slope before attempting to search for the victim! He was found after having been buried for three hours.

Lech had a lucky escape when an avalanche went down over the piste in the Mohnenfluh area, covering the piste over a length of 120 meters. Pure luck that nobody was buried!

Be careful out there! Warm temperatures over the next few days may well increase instability off piste, so take note of local warnings and don't ski closed slopes - they're closed for good reason.

Borovets Webcams are showing snow on the ground... forecasts for much of Europe are pretty "dynamic" at the moment.

Gotta be one for your doc I think...

If the doc's ok then the deciding factor will be whether your husband can get comfortable in a ski boot. Does he have his own boots?

Let's be thankful it wasn't a worse outcome...

A timely reminder that "off piste" starts as soon as you pass the markers.

Be interested to know what clues made you doubt your route Ise?

Was astonished earlier this week to see two guys skinning up (in falling snow and poor visibility) at Le Chinaillon, at the foot of a steep slope on which numerous fresh slides were obvious - with large amounts of snow still in place on the exact same aspect.
Yet more snow fell this week, across the majority of Alpine resorts, with low temperatures maintaining the excellent bases almost everywhere. High winds last weekend caused some lift closures, and reduced powder depths in many areas - although subsequent snowfall has replaced much that was lost.

For almost all the main ski areas, snow depths remain considerably greater than their historical averages for mid-December.

Weather and Snow Next Week

There's a distinct split in fortunes this week. Many Austrian resorts are seeing further significant snow this coming weekend, and will see more through to Christmas Day. Clearer weather will be the norm for the West of The Alps with French, Italian and Swiss ski resorts seeing a noticeable rise in temperatures for a few days, with a good chance of sunshine.

The end of the week will be cooler - possibly extremely so - and there is a chance of snow before the New Year. The various forecast models have been quite dynamic over the past few days so exactly what will happen the other side of Christmas is unclear at the moment, other than a strong likelihood that it'll be cold...
