Thanks Admin for the correction :) I always do get percentages and degrees mixed up when I'm talking about slopes. Maybe someone should post up a little diagram of which way they measure them, for me ... Anyway - black piste 70 was ***** steep at the end  |

Yes! :) I think most of us who went on either the 2013, or the 2014 holiday, or both of them want to go on another holiday together. We're discussing resorts and hotels/chalets now. Maybe I should start a J2Ski 2015 holiday thread? Any J2Skiers and their friends and family are welcome to come with us - whether they're boarders or skiers, old or young, beginners or advanced ... |

I think 70 would be a black, even in France, and even if we'd been going the right way (according to Daved and Cat). I mean, with a 70 degree slope at the end of it even the French in Val d'Isere could hardly call it a red! ;) |

Thanks Paul :)
You went down that first section most impressively fast! I skied down the whole piste very slowly and carefully, as I don't like powdery lumps, but at least I managed to ski all the way down without stopping! There's a pretty steep section somewhere around the middle, and the whole thing is 1.85 Km long. I found this about that black 1, the Nera Folgarida, on here: http://www.valdisole.net/cms-01.00/articolo.asp?IDcms=47510&s=1124&l=en Nera di Folgarida - Folgarida The black slope of Folgarida was built during the summer of 1967, as a result of a consultation by the well-known Technical Director of the F.I.S.I. National Teams at the time, Ermanno Nogler. The slope was already approved for international races back in 1969, and in 1996 important changes were made to enlarge and define certain features of the slope. In 1998, floodlights were installed along the final part of the slope, giving skiers the chance to also try night skiing. Equipped with one of the most modern artificial snowmaking system, the slope can be completely prepared and groomed using programmed snow. It is a technical slope, with a vertical drop of 600 meters and an average width of 35 meters, wedged into the forest: it is a challenging descent but a fun and varied slope. Numerous ski competitions have taken place on this slope including the ISF Snowboarding World Championship in 1999 and numerous editions of the Snowboard Trofeo Topolino. Skiers that can ski down this slope without catching their breath definitely deserve a pat on the back. |

Oh - surely not - he wouldn't be so cruel!!! ;) I was watching that video and I wondered what it reminded me of and all of a sudden I realized! It was the training CD I had a go on for the hazard perception part of the theory driving test when my daughter was doing it! If that was the CD I'd have been going clickety click with my mouse all the way down through the crowd of skiers! The guy standing in the middle of the piste facing the wrong way with his ski stick stuck out sideways is really going too far! Mind you, by the end of the week we were all experts at overtaking slower skiers and boarders safely :) And you can see in that video that my skis are very fast on the steep stuff but no good when it gets flatter :( They were Rossingol Pursuit's 163 and I think they were too short for the flat stuff, but I kept them because they were very handy in the powdery lumps, and they even managed OK on piste 70 - the unpisted piste :) And you can also see the way we skied as a group - I slowed down at about 050 and looked round to check the others were still there, and then stopped at the junction sign and waved to make sure Simon and Billip1 went the right way, and then took off after Simon to overtake him before he'd gone too far ;) Thanks Paul - another lovely video :) |

Cat and I shared a twin room, and this is the view from our balcony at the Gran Baita hotel. It's my photo, taken with a disposable camera I bought for the trip, so it's not up to the standard of the other phtos.

Thanks Paul for another great video - of the second time down that piste that morning :)
That was the red Brenzi piste, number 8, coming down from Monte Spolverino - that lovely morning when we were up early (as usual) and the first ones on it - perfect corduroy :) The first time we went down it - me, Paul, Simon, and Davidsa2 - we were the first ones on it and no-one else was there :) Simon went first, with me behind, and we were all going pretty fast and Simon was carving his way down and I decided to overtake him on the left on the inside - something like in the men's Olympic ski cross event yesterday ;) - but Simon didn't see me (like whoever it was in that race yesterday that accidentally knocked out the guy behind) and he moved across to the left without looking over his shoulder (because he knew he was first on the piste) so that he was on a collision course with me, so I went right up the left hand side to avoid him and found myself in a blue run! I skied down it to the bottom, phoned Simon to tell him where I was, and met Old Boarder and his 2 kids just going up the number 3 chair, the Belvedere. So I invited them to share this lovely run with us (which starts at the top of this chair) and it was a great opportunity to ski/board with them. The others went up the chair (number 4) from the bottom of the red run and we all met up in the same place at the top. And then Paul decided to video Old Boarder and his 2 kids - which was really nice of him :) I reckon Paul did an excellent job of filming the boarders. That's Old Boarder, his daughter, and me at the top, Davidsa2 ski-ing very neatly as usual, and then Old Boarder's son doing a great job of making his way down the piste :) And there's about 1/4 second of me at the end, belting past Old Boarder's son at about 50 mph :) He said afterwards something about how we can really move! :) I really like these J2Ski group holidays :) There's always someone around on the slopes to ski/board with, and talk to when we're in the hotel :) |
