Stand with the toes, and balls of your feet on the bottom step of a staircase (facing the stairs). Raise, and lower yourself just using your ankles. You can hold the hand rail, but it's better if you are just balancing. It really works the muscles needed for edging a snowboard.

I really hope you have a great time. Don't expect too much on a first day.

Trencher,
It's a very strange thing, but I've just been doing a very similar exercise to that as part of my ski exercise program. It's in my book, but they don't do it on the stairs (which is just as well because we haven't got any!).

In my book, because it's for ski-ing I suppose, you do one leg at a time, by standing on one leg, and raise and lower your heel while keeping your toes on the floor. It's actually surprisingly difficult to do at first. And when you get good at it you have to do ten on each leg without putting your heel right down on the ground at all. I can manage all ten with my right leg but not with my left.

And Caron, I repeat best wishes for the boarding at Hemel

And there's only so much one can say about how to fix a dent in a ski, and it's been said :D

Has Tony been lazing around on the sofa watching telly again? Really? I thought he was out jogging or doing press-ups in the gym ready for his next ski holiday   :D

Sometimes Tony, I get the feeling that you simply can't be bothered to read my posts.

Snowbandit,
Maybe poor Tony's still in shock (after the incident with the lorry). I mean, he nearly lost more than just his finger

Tino,
Do you think you ought to edit that post, to protect future small brained J2skiers?

Thankyou so much for looking into this for me.

I think the overnight one might be the go Ill speak to my husband to see what he wants to do.

What is the best way about booking? Is there a number?

Littleski,
I did give you the number on page 3, but I admit it's been rather swamped with all the other traffic on here.

I would suggest phoning Rail Europe to discuss it with them and see if they have a better way of doing it (phone number from the U.K. 08448 484064). You can also pay them over the phone with a credit/debit card if you're happier doing that than doing it over the internet.

If you phone them up I'm sure they'll be able to help you with getting from Courmayeur to St Moritz, and from St Moritz to Geneva, especially if you have a look at Ise's tips first. He really knows far more than me about travelling around Europe by train, because he does it all the time, whereas I only do it once or twice a year. It was his idea to get the train to Chamonix, because it has a train station and it shares a lift pass with Courmayeur so there is a shuttle bus between the two places. I never would have thought of that one. I was going all the way to Turin unnecessarily.

I think if it was me and I could spare the extra money, I'd get the night train on Sunday from Paris Austerlitz to St Gervais Les Bains and then a taxi to the hotel in Courmayeur. I suppose you might even be able to get a refund for whatever hotel you're booked into in Paris for the Sunday night.

It is quite a difficult problem even for people used to finding their way around Europe, and I can see why you are struggling with it. Most British people seem to go on package ski holidays where the rep looks after you as soon as you land in whatever country you're going to, and takes you to your hotel/chalet in a bus, and then sorts out whatever problems you have during your holiday.

Best Wishes,

Ally
