I am really keen to ski in Austria and we are still considering Lech or Ischgl for early March.
However, the current weather conditions do support the argument about going high for certainty of conditions. This is particularly important when the family ski holiday has to take place at Christmas or Feb half term and you need to book ahead. That is one of the reasons we go back to Val d'Isere every year. A lot of the skiing is between 2,200m and 3,000m and the town is great as well. Current conditions look great according to the webcams and the freezing level is at or below the town at 1.850m. We'll be booking Christmas 2014 very soon. For our March 14 trip, it will just be me and other half and we can stay flexible. If the conditions in Austria are good then we will go there. If not, we'll go high. Simples. |

We went dog sledding in Hemsedal on one of our trips. Really really enjoyable. About £300 for a family of 4 with two sleds. I think the official Hemsedal website will have details. It was about 4 hours in total including pick up and drop off at the resort.
Regarding the weather it could be -5 or -20 at mid point! Best to have a look on snow forecast.com just before you head out. I don;t use them , but the rest of the family swears by hand and foot warmers. Have a great holiday. |

For someone who does not own skis (and probably never will), it doesn't seem that odd to me. If you go the right ski shop, you can hire near brand new high end skis every time you go on holiday and also change the ski type depending upon the prevailing conditions and the type of skiing you will want to do. Therefore ultimate flexibility.

Been following the 'knee trouble diaries' with interest. Nelly - sorry to hear you will not make it this time round.
My wife has been diagnosed with early stage osteoarthritis for her left knee. She's only just past 40 so is feeling a bit sorry for herself. It was slightly painful when we skied last week although a brace did help. Her GP has told her to keep fit (lots of exercise to strengthen the relevant muscles). She's also been on a pretty careful diet to reduce weight. Not good when the body starts to wear out!! |

A couple of the guys in our chalet were enjoying themselves in La Folie Douce last week. Apparently one heavily inebriated patron was intending to ski back down to La Daille at 5pm but was instead 'helped' by a couple of staff to get into the telecabin.
