Driving from Geneva to Courchevel
Started by User in France, 4 Replies
Personally I would go with a hire car - we tend to go through Annecy and along the lake picking up the Autoroute at Albertville - probably not particularly faster but its a nice run by the Lake and we tend to stop for a coffee and bite to eat near there. Also on way back we can stop at a hypermarket for all the nice French goodies.

It also means that if the snow is poor in Courchevel you can always hop in the car and drive to another resort.

If you do hire the French side - which tends to be cheaper to hire from - you will need either a vignette to travel up the Swiss motorway (and that may or may not be on the vehicle) or have to go out through the French sector (details are on the Geneva airport website - pm me if you are struggling to find them). Vignettes can be found on ebay - although I hear they are not legally transferable a friend of mine has been buying his Christmas vignette for about a fiver for years!

Swiss cars tend to come winterised - French need snow packs adding to the price. Hope that helps!
Day trips from Milan

Hi John

You can get a train to Aosta - its about 3 and a half hours - and then get a cable car from just behind the station up to Pila.

The trains do leave early - we met some guys from Milan who had used this route on the lift up around 10am - but they dod say they got a train about 6.00am!

Pila a great mixed ability resort, which would be great for a day or two - although I would try to do the overnight stop if you can to spread the travelling!

We always seem to have one night when it all going downhill and too much is taken - never stopped us the next day though - that would be a criminal waste!

I hate the overinflated prices at half terms, so work hard at beating the holiday companies at their own game!
Next half term we are off the the Dolomites, via BA and Bologna (same travel time as from Milan, but not a known gateway so Sat flights are still £130ish), car hire for a week at £200 (travelsupermarket - a Golf rather than squeezing into the tiniest Fiat!), and a garni in Ortesei (somewhere like this one - although we are staying elsewhere in the village now - http://www.garnirives.it/eng.htm who quoted me €38 pp per night B&B with free entry to local sweimming pool). Need to get dinner in local restaurants, but allow €25 pd and for a family of four thats the half term week for about £550 p.h. Admittedly out of half term thats still expensive, but its a lot better than the silly brochure prices!
