Pablo,
What is the difference between carving on hard pack on the piste and carving in deep powder? I admit I was afraid to try in case I crashed again.

Tony,
I WAS in a lesson, and all the instructor said was 'don't snowplough' without telling us what TO do. And I don't know what I did, but it must have been something pretty bad because I got thrown forwards through the air in something like a cartwheel and one of my legs really hurt and all I could think about was that post where whoever it was said you can bust the ligaments in your knee by over-extending your legs (which I'd just done).

Anyway, my leg was okay after I lay there for a few seconds, and after that I just did the sort of turns where you pivot your heel round and keep your skis flat, like you're ski-ing on egg-shells and I didn't fall over again. I certainly didn't try carving, which I can only do at speed, because that crash I'd had was quite enough for me. And, of course, I already had a broken big toe on my right foot, although I didn't know that at the time.

I realise you're not supposed to look at your skis, but it is rather alarming when they totally disappear out of sight

Thanks Tony,
Maybe that would explain why we haven't had any of our hired skis nicked in the 3 V's. We only ever eat in mountain cafes because other than that we eat in our apartment.

Has anyone here had their skis nicked from a mountain cafe?

There are some good evening spots, but I have to say that this year there was less entertainment than in previous years. That doesn't concern me, because I just like meeting new interesting people, and there is no shortage of those.
I might go again.

This seems a reasonably kind posting, I would have thought. I wonder then, why it got one starred?

It couldn't be.......surely not!

Dave,
I can't see anything wrong with your post, or anything anyone could object to. In general I have noticed that my posts seem to be graded according to the percentage of wibble (or non snow sports related content) they contain. But you usually wibble very little, so there must be another reason.

I have also noticed that no-one ever owns up to being the one starrer - but I can assure you that it wasn't me, because I don't grade people on their posts.

Also, I don't think Johnny said he'd bought a place in Niederau without seeing it, but without ski-ing it, although I went to an auction once to buy a house and it was amazing the number of people there who bought properties without having seen them

Tony,
I am no expert on this matter, but I would think the insurers would take into consideration normal practice regarding whether skis are locked up or not - and I haven't noticed any locked skis on my holidays. My instructor didn't lock his skis when we went in the cafe for a short break.

One thing that surprises me about all this ski theft, is how do the thieves make off with an extra pair of skis from a mountain cafe without someone noticing that they are either arriving without skis or departing with two pairs of skis. I have hardly ever seen anyone with two pairs of skis - only the odd instructor carrying a pair on his shoulder, presumably after something unfortunate has happened to one of his pupils.

Thanks Allie,
I'm glad you're back, safe and sound :D

I'd like to know how much your ski lessons cost, please. And how much the apartments were, if you know.

It sounds a great place, apart from all the drag lifts.

I would like to know how to carve in deep powder, if anyone has the time to explain it to me. My skis disappeared out of sight, down about 6 inches, and it was really frightening trying to turn without going crash!

Tony_H wrote:Ally. Please please please tell me you know what/who the Crazy Frog is?

When Stewart proudly showed us his new helmet (oo er) at Gatwick, I went: "Ring ding ding ding ding......" which kind of stuck for the week, and that picture on our final day at La Grotte was just perfect.
Although Stewart did think he looked more like a Nazi storm trooper to be fair.

Tony,
No, I had no idea what/who the Crazy Frog was until I asked my daughter just now. Apparently it has something to do with ring tones and ads on the telly. I never watch telly ads. For me they are an opportunity to do ski exercises or whatever. Thank you for explaining things.

Anyway, I think Stewart is right and he looks more like a Stormtrooper (at least I know what that is) than a Crazy Frog.

30% is quite a low figure for helmet wearing compared with what other people have been reporting. Did you do a one off survey report, or were you monitoring the situation throughout the week? And did you use a quadrat?
