Indeed. It's like hip and groovy and well smart and all that. And this is like us to them - tweet. And this is like them to us - tweet. It's like birds, innit.

The BRITS, the longest established winter festival for UK-based freeskiers and boarders in the Alps, is returning to the Swiss resort of Laax from the 21st - 28th March next year.

The week-long event combines eight British Snowboard and Freeski Championship events including the Animal Slopestyle, SNO!zone Halfpipe and Trespass Snowboard/Skiercross with non-stop music and parting.

Packages start from £230 per person including seven nights accommodation, seven days lift pass and an event pack containing an exclusive BRITS Ignite beanie and BRITS festival wristband, providing free entry to all of the club nights plus a bevy of discounts and event privileges.

There's a choice of hotels or apartments including the stylish Riders Palace and the brand new design hotel, Rocks Resort.

Some of the UK's top athletes including X-Games Gold medallist, Jenny Jones and Olympic hopefuls Ben Kilner and Zoe Gillings will be there along with budding amateurs, kids and rookies, giving all-comers the chance to compete for British titles and World-ranking points. All standards are welcome and competitors can pre-register online for any one or more disciplines.

For 2010 the organisers are adding more to the Après Sessions, including Home Run adrenaline-fuelled antics, Air Bag bravado, Highest Ollie posturing, free Demo Testing, plus live acoustic sets. The evening music menu will be covering all bases, with melodic flavours coming courtesy of internationally acclaimed solo artists, live bands and DJs that cross a spectrum of musical genres and styles.

Marmot Basin's New Canadian Rockies Express Quad Chair Opens

Marmot Basin near Jasper in Alberta, Canada, opened on November 11, its earliest opening day ever, and welcomed a record number of skiers and boarders for the first day of the season. Over 2,300 enthusiastic snow seekers hit the slopes on what will go down as one of, if not the best, opening days ever for this Rocky Mountain resort.

Six lifts and 43 runs were open and snow conditions were reported be "one of the best ever" for an opening day. Marmot's state-of-the-art snowmaking system complimented abundant early season natural snowfall resulting in near perfect mountain conditions.

"We were anticipating lots of skiers and riders for our first day of the season but never did we imagine there would be so many", said Brian Rode, Marmot's VP of Marketing. "Word got out that we had incredible snow conditions and more terrain open than any other resort and that's what did it for us" added Rode.

Marmot's new Canadian Rockies Express high speed quad chair was also in full operation and was the talk of the mountain. The new chair is very fast, travelling at over 5 meters per second, and takes riders up 2.3 km in only 7.5 minutes. Getting from the base of the mountain to the top of the upper area now takes less than half the time it took previously.

"We could not have asked for a better opening day. Everyone was thrilled with the snow conditions and the new high speed quad chair. The ski area was one big grin factory all day long", said Rode.

Marmot expects to open more runs very soon and is anticipating a record breaking season.

Public Electricity 'Filling Station' for Eco-Friendly Cars in Zell am See-Kaprun

Austria's twinned ski resorts of Zell am See and Kaprun are highlighting their on going efforts to do more to minimise the environmental impact of their successful tourism industry.

The 'Electro Drive' traffic concept of Zell am See-Kaprun means that guests and locals alike can already recharge their electro vehicles at public service stations. Now the twin towns are planning to offer emission-free transportion hire to guests such as electro bicycles, scooters, and Segways for rent. The resorts also promote car free days.

The Gletscherbahnen Kaprun AG lift company has made environmental protection a priority for a number of years now, especially the sensitive ecosystem of the glacier on Kitzsteinhorn. The company is the first lift operator in Austria to fulfil the high environmental standards of the international ISO 14001 environmental management certification.

Down in the resort many other businesses have already been awarded the Austrian ecologo for their commitment to the environment. The 'Amiamo Familotel', 'Romantikhotel' and 'Pension Hubertus' have all been so recognised for acting in an ecosensitive way and at the same time meet highest standards when it comes to service and quality.

The hotels reduce waste, save water and energy and thus are able to minimize environmental harm, while at the same time they pamper their guests with local and organically farmed food. The Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management has awarded these three enterprises its ecoseal and the 'Pension Hubertus' has also got the EU ecolabel.

Samoens New Chairlift Ready For Action
Started by User in Ski News, 2 Replies
The new Chariande Express six seater chairlift is ready to begin operation at the French Grand Massif region resort village of Samoens when the resort opens early next month.

The new 2.26km long lift ascends from 1,536m to 2119m in just six minutes with a passenger capacity of 3,000 people per hour. It replaces two old chairlifts and an old drag lift, more than doubling capacity as well as greatly decreasingly the ascent time on the route .

"This new lift will quite radically change skiing from Samoens from this winter will cut at least 16 minutes on the journey time from the bottom to top of the ski area while increasing uplift capacity by two-and-a-half times." said a resort spokesperson. "The time savings at busy times when queues used to develop on the old lifts will be even greater."

Skiers will be able to get from village level at 700m to 2200m in less than 20minutes and an average skier should now be able to get to the bottom of the DMC lift in Flaine in about half an hour from Samoens village.

As well as the new chairlift, slope improvement work will be finished too to offer more skiing for mixed abilities.
