The Snow is Back in the Alps
Started by User in Ski News, 3 Replies
N Alps, rained until approximately 5am this morning, just as well it has stopped as freezing levels are predicted to rise to >3000m next 2 days so any precipitation would of been pretty destructive even for high resorts. Planned to ski in Courmayeur today but seems they got very little fresh snow and forecast upto 17degC in town this afternoon.

Fair amount closed for the day in Chamonix. It feels that this year they have really taken to closing lifts which allow people to access avalanche prone terrain e.g. Cornu closed as people have been ignoring the closed sign letting the access the piste in Col du lac Cornu which has avalanche danger from above, even if the route to Planpraz is fine. Almost total disregard for safety of others means that perhaps even France has started to babysit; having given up on trusting people to use their common sense and follow the few rules they try to set.

There is good news with last 48hrs having really boosted the base.
1800m reporting 45+cm
3000m reporting 60+cm
60cm reported overnight above 3000m, 35cm at 1800m in Cham. Not much open today and could be a slow start tomorrow as isn't forecast to stop until tomorrow sunrise. Killer decision making on where to ski tomorrow, probably don't want to wait a day until sun has been on it given high temps forecast so people are going to have to choose very carefully indeed.
Lot of precipitation over night, looks like a good 15cm at 1800m. Definitely rain in town at 1000m and can't see rain snow limit because of cloud but hopefully not above 1500m. Not bad considering has come on a southerly. Force 4 wind though so watch out for wind slab, avalanche risk went straight back to 4 above 2000m.
To answer your question I would just choose your resort carefully. Lets imagine every run that finishes below 1800m (just a number) will be closed at that time of year. How many and what type of runs will you lose when that happens? I ski in Chamonix when snow level is zero at the bottom we have lost <5% of skiing. Although Admin does love to reference Chamonix resort level snow being poop in his weekly update; the depth at 1800m is the important depth at that is where everything but the home runs start (you can always bin down).

What aspect is the resort facing. If is South facing you need to be thinking about afternoon activities as likely snow will not be great. To me not having to ski in the afternoon makes this the best time of year as you can enjoy the food and wine. Kids might be less enthusiastic about this, although a good pool and toboggan run might save the day.
All weather reports seems to lining up now, with today much colder than expected. Hold this space but I am betting on N Alps getting something pretty reasonable over next 36hrs. Minimum 25cm at 1500m, optimist in me says +40cm at 3000m. All those with flights home on Monday should be cancelling them now.

Am pretty sure plastics, especially those exposed to high UV should be thrown at 5 years, which means even if has only had light use needs to be junked.

All things equal buy a Briko Vulcano FIS 6.8. Looks fantastic , comes in a blue that matches my ski jacket, reasonable enough price and looks like will last forever. Christmas present 2021 :-).
