:( Got a few more weeks before snow-time yet though - what are your docs saying? You oughta be fit by mid-season at the latest I would have thought... (but stay away from "non-snow related sport" in the meantime - far too dangerous!).
The Irish Association of Snowsports Instructors to present at the Interski Congress in St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria, 15-22 January 2011

The Irish Association of Snowsports Instructors (IASI) is presenting a lecture at the forthcoming Interski Congress in St. Anton, Austria, January 2011. The lecture will be presented by David Murrie a former professor of sports biomechanics in the United States, an IASI member and very experienced ski teacher. This will be the first time that Ireland have delivered at Interski and marks a huge step forward for Ireland's recognition as a snowsports teaching nation.

The Interski Congress takes place every four years and is in effect the "snowsport instructor's Olympics". Snowsports teaching nations from around the world come together to exchange ideas on the latest in ski & snowboard technique and teaching methodologies. The theme for the forthcoming congress is "Do it, Feel it, Be it".

IASI's delegation for Interski includes; Derek Tate, IASI's Head of Training and Director of BASS Chamonix (a small elite ski school in Chamonix, France), Pete Gillespie, IASI Board Member and Director at The Snow Centre, Hemel Hempstead (an indoor skiing facility in the UK and one of IASI's course venues) and David Murrie, a graduate of Loughborough University with a background in athletics, skiing, coach education and sports science.

Commenting on the forthcoming congress, IASI's Head of Training Derek Tate says, "this will be the 2nd time that I have attended an Interski Congress, the last time being Norway in 1999, but this will be a even greater occasion for Ireland and IASI as we will have a active role in the congress with Dave Murrie presenting to the
assembled snowsports nations of the world. This will do an enormous amount for our credibility in the world of snowsports teaching and help to gain better recognition for IASI qualified snowsports instructors. Attending and being actively involved in these big International meetings is essential as it helps employment opportunities for our members around the world".

The Congress also provides an opportunity for member nations to demonstrate their skills with the bigger nations sending demonstration teams and delivering on snow workshops.

C'mon brimster... we're all so jealous of snowb4ndit's coming season we're trying to ensure her car is too overloaded to get off the drive when she tries to leave!

Now, what about gym equipment? Very difficult to get cross-trainers in France...
I received the following by PM but will reply here as it might be of interest to someone else.
I'm still searching for Austrian and French resorts with a) lots of tree-line skiing b) gentle cruising blues, my ski partner doesnt like heights so pistes which appear to "fall away" are a no-no c) transfer time under 2 hours d) a village with a bit of character

I had narrowed it down to SC and Montgenevre and Kirchberg (as an outside possibility) but have just now found La Clusaz. It looks perfect for us with plenty of trees to hide the height issue, lots of easy-ish runs and very French (in a good way). My only concern now is that the lower sections leading to the village are fairly low and was wondering if they tend to suffer from poor conditions. We will be travelling the first week of February so that should help.

La Clusaz would be ideal, as would its neighbouring resort of Le Grand Bornand. Both very French and very friendly (good cheese too!).

In any normal season snow cover will be good all the way to village level in February.

Obviously check the piste maps carefully but you should find some good skiing to suit.

If your partner is comfortable on chair-lifts then (in La Clusaz) there are long, wide, easy Blues just above the town; with lots of space and no cliff edges (unless you take a seriously wrong turning, of course). Just avoid the top section of l'Aiguille.

Beauregard has a selection of easy runs and is accessed by gondola - often sunny with good views and tends not to attract so many faster skiers (hence less intimidating for the nervous).

The Croix Fry area has (I think - been a while since I've been there) quite a few button lifts, if your partner prefers to stay on the ground, and is all tree-lined with mainly Blues. Usually possible to ski into town from here.

You should avoid the top section of La Balme (above the tree line) but there is a long Blue down from the gondola station that should be ok. You can ski back into town from here but would need to ride the ski bus to get there.

And to avoid heights completely, there's cross-country available up at Confins (bus ride out of town).

Most of the runs at Le Grand Bornand are below the tree line - just avoid the Le Lachat peak as there's no really easy way down.

Admin's Shears (a bit like Occam's Razor but rustier) have been applied.

Please keep on-topic people; this is an important subject. Abusive or aggressive posts will be removed so say what you have to say politely - it's really not that difficult.
