Another interesting week for weather (and snow) watchers in Europe. Snow last weekend was followed by a substantial, but brief, rise in temperature early in the week - accompanied by heavy rain to quite high levels (up to 2000 metres). Although this wrecked the early snows at low altitude, the resultant thaw / freeze has provided a useful consolidation of the snow pack at mid levels.
The Pyrenees did less well this week, although further afield in Northern Europe conditions improved further and four ski areas are now open in Scotland. In the last couple of days Alpine temperatures have once again fallen, dramatically in many places, with accompanying snow once again to the valley floor. In North America, good conditions are widespread - with some of the biggest snowfalls to the East Coast. European Weather and Snow Next Week The coming week looks a little less eventful than of late - past the next 24 hours there will be less in the way of snow but it will remain cold. The longer term outlook is encouraging; the second half of December in The Alps looks like being both cold and snowy but more on that next week. A little news from us - J2Ski Today we rolled out an update to our Snow Reports and Forecasts. We now cover more resorts worldwide than ever before, in more detail and we'll update more regularly each day to catch the very latest information we can from multiple sources. So check out your favourite resorts and see how they're doing. Start with our main Snow Forecasts Page for a quick summary of what's open, where it's snowed and what's forecast around the world. |

Contact your car insurer if you are thinking about fitting winter tyres!

According to that article...
Any insurer viewing correctly-fitted and in-spec winter tyres as "a modification" is trying it on and needs to be challenged head-on. The advantage of winter tyres, in winter, is so clear-cut that insurers should be looking at encouraging their use through the use of discounted premiums. It'd be interesting to hear from anyone who actually has been charged an additional premium, identifying the insurer so we can all avoid them in future! For starters, Admiral have just confirmed to me that they do NOT view winter tyres as modifications and there is no need to inform them of their use. No surprise there. If your insurance company think differently then ditch them - simples. |

This Week
Huge snowfalls and very low temperatures were reported from across The Alps, with less widespread but still impressive new snows blessing North America. Around one third of all Northern Hemisphere resorts are now open with superb early season conditions for most, particularly in Europe. Big snows arrived in The Alps at the beginning of the week and have only just begun to ease off in the past 24 hours. European Weather and Snow Next Week Following a few days of fairly settled weather, albeit with further light snow expected on Saturday to many areas, we expect temperatures to rise a little into the early part of next week. This is likely to be a brief interlude, however, before cold weather follows and the weather system will bring yet more precipitation. Early next week, probably Monday or Tuesday, looks like a further significant snow event - at least for the Western Alps. This will accompany the rise in temperature, however, so the exact mix of rain and snow (i.e. where the snow line falls) is very uncertain at this point. We don't expect temperatures, and therefore the snow line, to move much above the seasonal average so next week should see consolidation and improvement to the snow packs in most resorts. Definitely another interesting week coming up! 8) |

 Just as well you were at Heathrow! Gatwick is shut for the day (Thursday) again. We're about an hour to the East of Gatwick and have had at least 20cm overnight... for some reason my son thinks he's not going to school today... 8) |
