Yes, they're out there... 8) Start with a list of resorts in your favored country, then cross off all the areas the major Tour Operators go to - you'll be left with a bunch of places most people have never heard of; there are plenty. Look at the Aravis for starters (La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand, etc.); although they're decent ski areas, the big TOs don't go there. Also look at the lesser-known resorts in the Dolomites; one of the smaller stations on the Sella Ronda will give you access to lots of skiing. I think bandit may also be able to suggest somewhere but she may need bribing... |

Snow Forecast Summary - 24th February 2011

The big news of the week is that, at long last, significant snows have fallen across the French Alps.
Widespread falls have improved conditions right across Europe, hitting The Alps, The Pyrenees and The Dolomites alike with accumulations exceeding half a metre in many resorts. France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany have all been reporting powder conditions at times. Snow continued to fall in North America this week, with most areas adding to already impressive depths. Extraordinary amounts of snow (3 metres in seven days!) have been reported from Lake Tahoe and ski stations in Colorado. European Weather and Snow This Coming Week More snow is expected overnight tonight (Thursday), likely to be spreading into the Alps from the East. The Western Alps (French Alps and West Switzerland) are also in the firing line for more significant snowfall through Sunday. Local accumulations could be quite substantial. The general outlook over the next few days is very variable and will likely see the occasional clear spell mixed in with further bands of light to moderate precipitation as the week progresses. Once again the forecast models are proving quite dynamic, and difficult to judge with confidence, but they are at least consistent in the unsettled weather they're predicting! Temperatures are currently well below average in the Eastern Alps but are expected to rise over the next few days toward seasonal averages - precipitation may be lighter than elsewhere this week but local snows could still be quite heavy at times. Jolly Good! 8) |

Top rant EmmsEvsmmEmEvs (another vowel please Carol), GPWM. 8)
All further contributions to this Topic to be on-topic please (or they'll be vaped). Ice can easily catch out the un-wary (or even the wary for that matter). Given the cold and dry conditions that have prevailed in a number of European resorts (particularly France and the Western half of The Alps), it's certainly something worth learning about. The absolute worst ice I've ever encountered was in Serre Chevalier; top half of the mountain was great skiing but the cannons on the lowest sections of the Blues into Monetier had done a good job of creating the hardest boiler-plate ice we'd seen away from the blue of a glacier. Our entire group (6 of us I think) went down and slid quite some way - once up we gave up on the piste and took to the trees instead; it was way safer (more fun too). So definitely approach cannoned snow with caution until you know what it's like! And if you find yourself on it, relax, stay balanced and focus on the next patch of grippy snow you can see. |

Mid-March is a great time to go; snow should be good just about everywhere and it's not peak time so there will be some good deals about as long as you're a little flexible. Hold your nerve and wait until the week before; then check the snow situation and look for a deal - I'd put money on your having a choice of deals around 50% off full price if you do that. |

The very lovely Miss Sky is blogging from Warren Smith's Japan Powder Camps over the next couple of weeks.
So if you want to make yourself as green as Warren's lid, and check out some slopes with a difference (Niseko, famous for powder goes only as high as 1300 metres) drop in here :- http://www.warrensmith-skiacademy.com/japanblog2011/ Here's a couple of pics shamelessly lifted...
 Maybe next year... |

Do all ski resorts have to have a blue run off the mountain?

No, that's not true. Only resorts that want their beginners to return have Blues back to base... 8) That said, the grading at Val d'Isere has something of a reputation - it's the only resort where I've encountered a mogul field on a Green run. They are alleged to do it to ensure they have enough easy runs to appeal to all skiers. |

You mean the way it keeps your ass in frame and focus at almost all times? I was quite impressed...   Looks like you enjoyed yourself, and some tidy skiing Miss Evs. |
