Allie,
I'm sure you'll have a great time in Obergurgl. Let us know how you got on when you get back :D Ally |

Sm4sh,
Don't worry too much about what level of skier you are. In all the group lessons I've been in they simply ask how many weeks of ski-ing I've done and then test me with the others to separate out the groups. There is usually a group for skiers with one week of experience, which would be you. And then people generally move up or down the groups depending on how fast they improve, so that the standard of each group stays about the same. As you could see for yourself, it is very annoying when there are slow learners who hold back the rest of the group, and it's upsetting for them as well - feeling like they are being pushed on too fast out of their comfort zone. I think that's very bad, your instructor not even turning up for the last day! You can see now why most of us were rather critical of Borovets and Bulgaria. That simply wouldn't happen in a posh (and very expensive!) resort like Courchevel, where I was. If the instructor was ill or whatever they'd find another one. Have fun picking your resort for next year! I took my younger daughter to Zell am See in Austria for her second ski holiday, which seemed to work out very well for her. Ally |

Sm4sh,
I would expect there to be lots of cheap deals for the end of March this year - here's one: http://www.igluski.com/meribel-mottaret/laitelet-i_p341?holidayid=27933074 Catered chalet, based on 2 sharing, in Meribel, reduced from £589 to £308 26th March. And Meribel is fine for skiers with one week's experience :D Are you going to be able to get away for another trip this season? Ally |

Allie,
I have skied in Obergurgl and Hochgurgl, but I don't know the answer to your question, I'm afraid. Hochgurgl is sort of stuck half way up the mountain with pistes above and below it. Obergurgl is lower down with pistes only above it, and is more like a 'real' village and larger with more facilities. Hochgurgl seemed to be just luxury hotels, but I thought myself it was more attractive because of that. We stayed in Obergurgl and it was great. I would imagine Hochgurgl has a smaller ski school, if that makes any difference to you? Ally |

I took my hired skis back for free sharpening and waxing half way through the week (very strange ski conditions with ice and powder) and the difference was remarkable. I went much faster afterwards (overtook everyone in my group whilst schussing).
I don't know anything about looking after one's own skis, but judging by this experience I'd say waxing and sharpening were both a good idea :D Ally |
