Why do skis get deep holes in them?

With a bit of luck both my kids will be at Uni by Christmas, and neither of them will be able to miss lectures etc. And I can't very well tell my friend and her kids that they should miss school
I have registered for the early tickets for the direct Eurostar going out in the day on the 31st Dec and back at night on the 7th Jan, in the hope that the train will actually be running. But I won't know that until they contact me to sell me the tickets in July. And if my friend and her kids have made up their minds by then to come with us, I will buy tickets for them as well. Even Inghams don't know yet if the train will be running, as they don't seem to be selling Eurostar tickets for the 31st. Plan B is to fly to Geneva and ski at Tignes Monday to Monday, straight after Christmas. That way no-one has to miss school or Uni. But I prefer plan A. Ian, as you said, you have all this to come. Schools can do horrid things like arrange an assessed A Level practical exam for the first week back in January without letting the parents know. When my kids were young they did take time off school to go ski-ing. I used to fill in a form for the holiday and they were okay with it. And I'm sure they did learn more during that week than they would have done if they'd been in school. And I saved a great deal of money :D Ally |

I have had minimal experience of snow parks and jumps etc. but what I do know is that they are very dangerous places, but most people don't actually end up paralysed. They 'just' break their arms etc. I would say your poor unfortunate client was very unlucky indeed  I hope he was well insured.
I remember one of my ski instructors said that the snow park kept the medical centre very busy! I know I had a go over the jumps at the top of the resort in Kaprun in Austria, and after I'd gone over the last one I was going fairly fast and out of control and there was a man standing there watching his friend go over another jump and I skied right into him. Luckily we were both okay, but he shouldn't really have been standing there. And, in Val Thorens, our instructor took us into the new boarder cross in a group lesson without realizing that it wasn't actually finished yet, and I can remember rocketing up the wall and shooting out the end and even the instructor was rather taken by surprise. But luckily none of us fell over. In February I was going through the boarder cross in Courchevel, very slowly and carefully, and there was a kid who'd fallen over sprawled across the top of one of the jumps. Because I was only going slowly I managed to avoid her. And my daughter had a private lesson in the same snow park in Courchevel and she went over a big jump and lost one of her skis and the girl behind was going too close to her and nearly got hurt on her ski. So, I do think the snow parks should be supervised, something like the slides and waterchutes are in our swimming pools, to make sure people know what they're doing and that they keep a safe distance from the person in front. I didn't see anyone controlling the ones in Kaprun, VT, or Courchevel. I was talking to someone in Courchevel and his son had a really bizarre accident in the snow park. He was an experienced jumper, but when he was in mid-air one of his skis came off and he landed on it and hurt himself quite badly. Ally |

More skis Bandit? How many pairs have you got now? And what's so special about K2's She's Back? :D |

Tony,
The main problem is trying to find a week during the two week Christmas period that will suit me and my two daughters (my older one now wants to come too), and my friend and her two kids as well. We all had a lot of fun last ski holiday, ski-ing together, and it would be great if we could do it again. It's just very difficult to organize. Ally |

I hired K2's True Luvs last ski holiday, and they were okay - nothing exciting and a bit slow (even after I had them waxed) but they were fine on and off the piste and in the powder.

Lota and Dave, is there enough ski-ing for a week?
And where exactly did you leave your skis Dave? My daughter could do with a pair of those to use at Perisher  Ally |

Strangely enough, I am currently planning a 3 day coach ski trip to Perisher for my daughter in the middle of July, from Sydney, as she will be in Australia during the summer.
I hope there will be enough snow for her by then. It looks like quite a good ski resort :D Ally |
