Have been to ski school at Soll & booked with the TO - Crystal/Thomson. They can tell you what you need depending what level you are e.g. If your a complete beginner you'll only be on the lower slopes for the first few days (snow permitting). Great place to learn - enjoy!

Agree with Iceman - better après in Soll

Bit of both really. We were there a few years ago & enjoyed dancing on the tables from 5pm one evening followed by a relaxing evening sipping a glass of wine by the fire in a hotel bar the next - enjoy!

Haven't used them but have stayed in the Morgan in Risoul which they now run. Basic accommodation but clean, comfortable, has everything you need & great location.

I'd definitely recommend Risoul. Had some great weeks there learning to ski in Risoul - the most friendly ESF instructors - whilst my OH took himself off over to Vars & had a great time. Quietisish nights but some good places to eat - the Marmot being our favourite. Good places for lunch as well - Le Tetra & L'ecruille especially. As I improved went over to Vars as well & loved it - really good confidence booster. The only downside was the TO transfers which took 3-4hrs from Turin. Will def go there again one day!

Spent many happy weeks in Risoul. Great skiing area linked with Vars, good lifts, hardly any queues, great mountain restaurants and when we've been in early Jan, great conditions. Went to ski school there with the friendliest ESF instructors. Stayed in both the Sara residences & club Morgan Hotel (with First Choice then Crystal). Liveliest apres ski was in Les Melezzes but otherwise fairly quiet. The main downside for us, going with a TO, was the transfers - 4hrs or more which is why for the past few years we' ve gone to Austria. Would be very happy going back there though!

Hi Sue Cymraeg! As you'll have gathered the Scarlets love Soll!! (Despite not knowing each other as Fez says!). We've been in February & March but usually conditions much better the earlier we've been. Haven't stayed in Hopfgarten but have had a look around the village. The biggest difference you'd notice in Soll is that it's a bus ride to the gondola in the morning. After that you've got the same fantastic skiing options. The red home run to Soll is narrower than Hopfgarten & gets very busy and a bit cut up at the end of the day but, in good conditions you can ski to (almost ) the Salvenstadle ! Have stayed in Ellmau as well but found Soll village much more compact & quicker to get up the mountain - thogh we love skiing over there from Soll, sometimes spending the day there. Après ski in Soll is great - a good mix of bars, live music & all night dancing should you wish! If flights are also a consideration and, like me are from South Wales (????) flights to Salzburg for Soll available from Cardiff & Bristol. We fly to Innsbuck for Mayrhofen & have to go from Birmingham (with our fingers crossed that the pilot can land!!!). Have fun wherever you decide to go.

Hi Scarlet Fez. Thanks for the reply. It was quite difficult not going back to Soll but thought it was time to explore another bit of Austria - sounds like we made a good choice despite the divided opinions!! Look forward to hearing what you thought of Saalbach when up get back. Enjoy!
